Question:

Vasectomies vs. tubal ligation?

I am 21 years old and already have three beautiful children and me and my fiance are wondering how to prevent having more kids! lol basically I cant remember to take a pill and we dont like condoms so it's either a vasectomy or getting my tubes tied but we would like to have more kids in the future. So my question is what is easier a vasectomy or getting tubal ligation. I heard that tubal ligation is very very painful and can have down time of about 6 weeks which means no getting out of bed or even holding my baby. And a vasectomy is easy on the man, cuz its a 30 minute procedure and they are back to work within a couple of days. Has anybody gotten both done or does anyone know what the side effects are for both and which one is cheaper?

Please no rude comments.. thanks!

  1. The description you received about tubal ligation isn't quite right. Yes, it is painful- but it is also PERMANENT. You don't want your tubes tied until you are 100% sure that you are all done with pregnancies. Doctors avoid this surgery if they can. I have had tubal ligation.  While it is a painful experience, you aren't supposed to lie in bed for 6 weeks and never hold your kids. You do need to take it easy, but not *that* easy! LOL! They want you to be up and moving around, that makes recovery go much easier and faster. There are also weight lifting restrictions- I think it's 10 lbs during the recovery period, to prevent internal bleeding.

Vasectomies are much easier than tubal ligation (pain, recovery time, and cost) and they CAN be reversed. I don't know any specifics though. Personally, I would lean more towards birth control pills, an IUD, or diaphragm. No surgery is ever fun, why do it when you know there will have to be another to turn it around? It just doesn't seem ideal to me. Jmo.

    Best of luck!

  2. I would say to do the vasectomy, really, it is less painful for him and the side effects he would experience would be less than the ones you do. I got a copper IUD because I can't remember a pill and don't like hormones anyway, and I have heard women that have the tubal and then basically have PMS symptoms for most days for the rest of their lives, also have heavier cramps and periods, but that certainly doesn't happen to everyone, I just personally would never try it. Good luck!:)

  3. With either procedure, there is a chance of not being able to reverse the sterility.  Neither one is cheap.

Because you would like more children in the future, and have decided that the pill and condoms are not the best choices for the two of you, you may wish to consider a non-permanent, non-surgical sterilization.

Depo-Provera is a shot given to women that prevents pregnancy.  You would get it about four times per year.  It is as more effective than if you were taking birth control pills everyday at the same time each day.  Except, with Depo-Provera, you don't have to take any medicines, you just go to the doctor when you're scheduled.  It keeps you from getting pregnant as effectively as a tubal litigation. You can quit getting the shots whenever you and your fiance decide to try for a baby.

  4. The Vasectomy is an easier procedure done, and is often times easier and cheaper to reverse.  My dh had a Vas done, and we just reversed it, after 24 years!  (He got it with his ex wife).  The thing is that neither is guaranteed to be a success if reversed, but I've seen and heard of babies born after both!  I think an IUD might be a good option for you, since it normally can stay in for 5 years, and prevent pregnancy, and not something you have to remember.  If you are looking for a permenant method, a vasectomy would be the better of the two.  Best wishes!

  5. Hands down winner in my book is a vasectomy, I had one, my girlfriend had her tubes tied, she has never told me how long her recovery was but I have to assume it was much longer than mine.

But remember...IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED PERMANENT...unless you plan on winning the lottery, because reversals are EXPENSIVE and of course not guaranteed...

Have you considered long term BC such as Depo shot? supposedly good for about 5 years... your mileage may vary!

  6. Personally speaking, have your  bf get vasectomy if u guys are serious about each other. He can get it reversed later if u 2 decide its not going to work between the 2 of u. Maybe he might want more. Another alternative is to get an IUD.  Talk to your doctor about this procedure. It doesn't hurt. Your not in the hospital recoveringand u won't be in pain after during s*x.

  7. personally i think you should get an IUD the percentage of gettingpregnant while it's in place is less then the percantage with a tubal and / or vasec. and within a few months of getting it removed you can get ptegnant, so in my opinion that would be your best bet!

  8. well neither of these would be good options if you want to have more children in the future (unless your want to adopt) because both are hard and sometimes impossible to reverse. a vasectomy is cheaper and has less side effects and less complications. If you want another for of birth control besides the pill and condoms there is an IUD which is places in the uterus and can be left there for many years and doesn't interfere with s*x. or there is the patch which is similar to the pill but you only have to put it on once a week and not everyday. there is also a shot you can get every 3 months that will prevent pregnancy. I would talk to your doctor and consider all the options especially if you want children in the future. Hope this helps and good luck.
