Vasek Pospisil, Bobby Reynolds clear first qualifiers – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Vasek Pospisil ousts Mathieu Rodrigues 7-5, 3-6, 7-5
Ninth seed Vasek Pospisil stepped up after going down in the second set to topple the world number 225, Mathieu Rodrigues, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, in the opening round of the qualifying draw at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Tuesday.
The Canadian required two hours and 25 minutes to post a close win over Rodrigues.
Pospisil and Rodrigues traded one break of serve in the first 11 games of the opening set, making the score 6-5 in favour of the Canadian. Pospisil struck once again in the 12th to close the set 7-5.
Rodrigues and Pospisil broke each other on a number of occasions in the second set. However, it was Rodrigues who grabbed three of the four and captured it 6-3.
From the number of breakthroughs both players were making, it looked like the match was being played on a clay court instead of hard. The trend continued in the final set, as Pospisil and Rodrigues snatched a couple of breaks in
the first 10 games to level the score at 5-5. The Canadian drew the last blood, winning final two games to seal the set 7-5.
Pospisil will take on Maxime Authom of Belgium in the second qualifier.
Bobby Reynolds beats Peter Gojowczyk 6-4, 6-1
Seeded at number 10, Bobby Reynolds of USA scored a convincing win over Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to proceed to the second qualifier.
Reynolds did not take much time to move ahead, as he claimed a break in the very first game of the opener, taking a 1-0 lead. Gojowczyk responded quickly as he struck back immediately to level the score at 1-1. The American made
another breakthrough in the next game and it proved decisive as he maintained it till the end, serving out the opener at 5-4.
The second set was a one-sided affair. Reynolds bagged first four games to race to a 4-0 lead. Gojowczyk succeeded in holding his serve in the fifth to avoid a bagel but lost it again in seventh, dropping it 1-6.
Reynolds had an amazing first serve conversion rate, winning all the eight points on them in the second set. In comparison, Gojowczyk could claim just seven of the 13 and committed three double faults.
The American closed out the match after an hour and 16 minutes of play.
Reynolds is slated to meet Canadian Frank Dancevic in the second round of the qualifying draw. Dancevic crushed Arnau Brugues-Davi of Spain in the first match.
