Vasek Pospisil, Sergei Bubka into the main rounds – St. Petersburg Open 2011
Fourth seed in the qualifying draws, Vasek Pospisil of Canada registered a comprehensive victory over the fifth seeded Russian, Alexandre Kudryavtsev, to make it to the main rounds of the St. Petersburg Open on Monday.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex in Saint Petersburg, in Russia, with the Canadian competitor registering a straight sets victory at 6-2, 6-3. Pospisil took just 65 minutes
of play to drive his opponent out of the competition and booked a berth in the main draw of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250.
The fourth seeded Canadian outplayed his opponent in every segment of the game and gave him limited chances to get on top. He delivered 63 per cent of his serve on target and secured 20 out of 30 first serve points in the matchup
to come out as the winner. Pospisil converted five of his eight break opportunities, while Kudryavtsev registered two breaks of serve in the competition to finish on the losing side in the end.
Kudryavtsev received his first jolt of the day in the second game when his opponent broke his serve to race away to 3-0 lead early in the game. A second serve break came in the eighth game, sealing the first set in Pospisil’s favour
at 6-2. Kudryavtsev broke twice in the second set but was brought down by the Canadian with three crushing breaks of serve to finish off the matchup.
Pospisil will take on the unseeded Italian, Andreas Seppi, in the opening round of the main draw on Tuesday.
Seventh seeded Ukrainian, Sergei Bubka, also qualified for the main rounds of St. Petersburg Open after defeating Ilya Belyaev in the final round qualifiers. He took one hour and twenty five minutes of play to wrap up victory in
straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to force his way to the opening round of the main draw.
Bubka didn’t drop a single set throughout the qualifying rounds and registered three assertive victories to make it through. He secured 29 out of 37 first serve points in the matchup and converted four of 13 break chances to dump
the Russian opponent from the competition. Belyaev registered two serve breaks in the contest but it wasn’t enough to contain the aggressive seventh seed in the matchup.
Bubka will play his opening round match against Croatia’s number one, Marin Cilic, on Tuesday.
