Vasek Pospisil beats Roman Borvanov to qualify for the semi-final – Van Open 2011 CH
Vasek Pospisil of Canada is on the path to greatness, and is just one step away from entering the main spot, as he beat Roman Borvanov of Moldova in the quarter final 6-3,
6-2 and has entered the semi-finals, being played at the Hollyburn Country Club, Vancouver, Canada.
Pospisil, ranked 186th in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) rankings lists, scored a straight sets victory over Moldavian in the quarterfinal of the
tournament as he continued his bid to win the first challenger tour event of the season. Pospisil, who could not move past the first round, last year, struck a whopping seven aces with a single double-fault and advanced after one hour and fifteen minutes.
The 21-year-old looked to have the momentum against the Moldavian from the very start while Borvanov hung with Pospisil until the very end, failing to secure the very last
hold he needed that would have gotten him to a third set In an attempt to reach the last four.
Borvanov went neck-and-neck with Pospisil for the first six games, as both players held serve without any trouble. At 3-3, however, Borvanov’s game started to suffer a considerable
dip. The 29-year-old Moldavian missed a volley and misjudged a Pospisil passing shot before netting a forehand to donate the break and Pospisil promptly served out the opening frame of play with ease at 6-3.
Maintaining his momentum, the world No. 186 seized an immediate break in the second set when Borvanov sent a forehand over the baseline. From there it was all over, and
Pospisil added another break at 4-2 just for good measure. A final hold allowed the Canada’s No.6 seed to nab the victory without facing a single break point the entire way.
Emerging victorious, Pospisil now marches on into the semi-finals of the tournament where he will meet fifth-seeded James Ward of Great Britain, who destroyed Alex Bogdanovic
in three sets to reach this far.
Both players have never met each other at any of the ATP tour level events and will meet for the first time in their career, as the two go head-to-head for a place in the
final here at Vancouver, Canada.
