Vasek Pospisil nails Roman Borvanov in second round – Tiburon Challenger 2011
Canadian International, Vasek Pospisil, squared off against Roman Borvanov of Moldova in the second round of Tiburon Challenger Tournament, hosted in California, USA, on October 13th. Fifth seeded Canadian breezed past the Moldovan in straight sets, clinching a 6-3, 6-0 victory in an hour and eight minutes. The third meeting between the two players helped the Canadian take the lead in the head-to-head score with 2-1.
21-year-old Canadian stepped in the match with a terrific form having won seven of his last nine battles and looked composed in the first-round match of this tournament as well. Borvanov had also been enjoying good run of form having won six of his last nine encounters. However, given the disparity in their rankings, it came as no surprise when the Moldovan lost in straight sets.
Pospisil started off the match in great style by sealing the first three games in a single go. It was the carbon copy of what these two came across in their previous encounter at Vancouver Challenger. Canadian entertained the crowd with his delicate drop shots and fierce serves. He ruled the show with three aces and 58% total points win rate in the first-set. He won 12 out 16 available points on his first serve and registered a massive 67% ratio of points in the second-serve as well. Everyone was delighted at his terrific command over each shot he played and praised him for that.
Dismantled and demoralized Moldovan couldn’t handle the pressure of the first set loss and disappointed the crowd with his pathetic second-set display. Fifth seed outshined the 29-year-old with his command over the game. He was on top of his game continued his domination throughout the second set, allowing no chance to the opponent to even win a single game. Pospisil broke his opponent’s serve thrice and it was good enough to round the set score with 6-0. He won 26 points compared to just 12 of Borvanov and enjoyed 100% dominance with his first-serve, winning maximum points on his seven serves. The second-serve points winning rate was not as fascinating as his overall performance in the match and he ended up with just 57% winning rate but it didn’t do much harm to him as he was unmatched in the rest of the departments of the game.
The overall result was very disappointing for the Moldovan International who couldn’t take revenge of his thumping defeat of their meeting and even worsened his stats with this terrible defeat. Vasek Pospisil will now face the top seed Ryan Sweeting in the third round of the tournament and considering this outstanding performance in this match, crowd is assured of another exciting battle in the next round of the tournament.
