Vasek Pospisil ousts Michael Yani to reach quarters – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Canadian starlet, Vasek Pospisil, trounced the American qualifier, Michael Yani, in straight sets at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Wednesday. He juggled up a 6-3, 7-5 victory against the world number 238 to secure a place in the final eight at this ATP
(Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Pospisil required one hour and 50 minutes triumphing over the Singaporean-born Yani in their first battle against each other. After recording this victory, the Canadian comfortably booked a spot in the quarter-finals at the Putra Indoor Stadium.
The 22-year-old stepped into this indoor hard court event in high spirits. He struck angled shots down the line to pluck his entire serves. Pospisil required a single break of serve in the sixth game and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win. He impressively
warded off both breakpoints he came across and converted one out of three break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 122nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Pospisil let his spark lit in the following set. He smoothly bagged his entire serves after brushing off all three breakpoints he faced. The Canadian clicked one out of 10 break
opportunities in the second last game and eventually sealed the set by winning seven games to five.
Overall, the Vancouver resident struck nine aces and committed fewer unforced errors. He produced a slightly higher first serve share of 63 per cent as compared to his rival’s 62 per cent and amazingly marked 38 out of 49 points on it.
Pospisil will next face the winner of the match between second seeded Juan Monaco and the Taiwanese wild card entrant, Jimmy Wang.
The seventh seed, Julien Benneteau, became the only other player to reach quarter-finals later that day. He dumped the Australian contestant, Matthew Ebden, in straight sets to progress. The French seed lost his serve once but capitalised on four out of
seven break chances to formulate a 7-5, 6-2 score line in one hour and 14 minutes. He fired five aces and ended the match with 64 points.
