Vasek Pospisil shocks Jurgen Melzer in opening round – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Canadian starlet, Vasek Pospisil, recorded a 6-4, 2-0 retirement victor over the eighth seed, Jurgen Melzer from Austria, at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Monday. The Austrian seed was forced to pull out from the tournament with a left quadriceps injury
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event held in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
The Canadian youngster showed brilliant skills to prevail in this clash. However, after 55 minutes from start of the match when Melzer was a set and 0-2 down, he was forced to retire with the injury. As a result, Pospisil secured a second round spot at this
indoor hard court event taking place from 22nd to 30th September.
Pospisil made a powerful entry at the Putra Indoor Stadium. He drew the first blood in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. The Canadian lost his edge in the very next game but broke Melzer’s serve once again to jump to a 5-2 lead. Apart from failing to
block the second breakpoint he faced, Pospisil capitalised on another break chance in the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line. He converted three out of five break chances to his advantage to inch towards glory.
Ranked 122nd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Pospisil carried his rhythm in the following set and held his opening serve with poise. He broke the Austrian’s opening serve through brilliant skills and jumped to a 2-0 lead.
However, Melzer sustained an injury after this and rewarded the Canadian a spot in the round of 16.
Pospisil will face off the American qualifier, Michael Yani, who trounced his compatriot, Brian Baker, in straight sets to set up this battle.
The Dutch star, Igor Sijsling, will accompany Yani in the following round. He crippled the local wild card entrant, Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam, with a breadstick to advance. Sijsling lost his serve once but cashed in six out of eight break chances to formulate
a 6-2, 6-1 score line in 50 minutes. He also fired three aces and finished the match with 54 minutes.
