Vasek Pospisil stuns Juan Ignacio Chela in the opening round – Rogers Cup 2011
Canadian wild card entrant Vasek Pospisil, ranked 155th in the world, made full use of home crowd’s support as he came back from a set down to upset world number 22 Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina in three sets 4-6,
6-3, 6-4 in the first round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Tuesday. The match lasted for two hours and 23 minutes.
The first set went with serve until the seventh game when Chela broke the Canadian to take a 4-3 lead. The Argentinean utilised the single break of serve to win the set 6-4.
The 31-year-old hit 56 percent of the first serves, claiming twelve of the fourteen first service points and eight of the eleven second service points in the opening set. Chela bagged four of the fifteen first return points and
capitalised on the one break point opportunity he created on the Canadian’s serve in the first set.
Pospisil fought back in the second set, breaking the Argentinean in the sixth game and holding his serve in the next game to blaze forward to a 5-2 lead. The Canadian served out the set in the ninth game, clinching it 6-3.
The 21-year-old had a low first serve percentage as he delivered a meagre 47 percent of first serves and was erratic on the second serve, committing three double faults in the second set. However, Pospisil saved the two break points
he faced on his own serve and won the only break point he received on Chela’s serve in the second set.
In the final set, Chela drew the first blood as he broke the Canadian in the sixth game to grab a 4-2 lead but the Argentinean was unable to clinch even a single game after that, getting broken in the seventh and ninth game to
lose the set 4-6.
Pospisil said, talking to the journalists in the post match press conference, "If anything, it helped me, to be honest. A little bit extra motivation, as if I need more motivation to win here. But because he's been an idol since
I was a little kid, I felt like I had a good chance to win today, so I really wanted to come through. So I was able to dig deep. With that for sure in the back of my mind, it probably helped me."
The Canadian is drawn to play former world number 1, Swiss Maestro Roger Federer in the second round.
