Vasek Pospisil stuns Matthias Bachinger to reach the quarter-finals – Heilbronn Open 2012 CH
Another surprising outcome was witnessed in the second round of the Intersport Heilbronn Open, as the third seed home favourite, Matthias Bachinger, crashed out from the competition at the hands of the unseeded Canadian, Vasek
Pospisil, on Thursday. The exciting three-setter took two hours and 19 minutes to conclude, with the 122nd ranked underdog coming out as the winner at 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6). He carried on his winning momentum against superior-ranked contestants to book
a place in the quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
Being played on the hard courts of Heilbronn, Germany, the contest witnessed a magnificent display of high quality tennis from both players. The match remained evenly posed until the last minute, with Pospisil labouring extremely
hard to make his way back in the competition. The unseeded Canadian eventually succeeded in doing so and clinched the tie-breaker to register an emphatic victory.
Rated at number 89 in the ATP World Rankings, Bachinger posed some serious resistance to his opponent before crumbling in the last moments of the match. His efforts in the contest were evenly matched by the 122nd ranked
Canadian and not much difference was seen in the overall match statistics.
Both players were off to a steady start in the opener and cautious game play was witnessed. Pospisil remained neck-to-neck with his third seed opponent by securing 14 out of 16 first serve points in the set. No serve breaks were
seen until the 10th game when the Canadian came out with a stunning break point conversion to close the first set at 6-4, getting 1-0 in the contest.
Pospisil failed to sustain his winning momentum for long and Bachinger nailed a crucial break point in the third game to lead 2-1. The third seed German won 14 out of 17 first serve points and held on to his remaining serves in
the second set to maintain his lead. Pospisil finally had a break chance in the 10th game of the set but thumped the ball straight into the net to fritter away the precious opportunity. Bachinger went on to defend the break point and closed out
the set in his favour at 6-4.
Serve breaks were traded in the sixth and seventh game from both sides, followed by a regular game to take the scores to 6-6. A tie-breaker round came into play and Pospisil stung a critical mini-break at 6-6 to earn his first
match point. The Canadian cashed in the match point with a cracking winner across the court to register his surprise victory at 7-6(6).
