Vasek Pospisil, Canadian world No.133, played his opening round match of Valencia Open 500 against the top ranked American, John Isner, World No.23. The three set match ended with a surprise as the 21-year-old Canadian rushed passed
the gigantic Isner winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(9) in a long 2 hour and 13 minutes hard indoor circuit match on Monday, 31st October, at Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia, Spain.
Starting off first, Pospisil fired up with the match starter serving out his first serve, 1-0. Following the Canadian, American world No.23 pulled off his first win of the match and levelled up the scores, 1-1. Serving out the
third game, the 21-year-old went on bagging his second win, 2-1, and led the set.
Breaking the higher ranked American 26-year-old, game 4, Pospisil extended his lead to 3-1 before he served out game 5 to roll down the scoreboard again, 4-1. With just two more games left for the Canadian to finish off the set,
Isner pulled back a game, 4-2, yet could not break back.
Serving out two out of the next three games, the young Canadian blistered away with the first set winning with mere difficulty, 6-3, and moved on to the second set.
Struggling in the first set, Isner continued with serving out the first game of the set two, 1-0. Covering back the lead, Pospisil levelled up right away, 1 -1, and switched the serve back. Winning a game each next, both players
levelled up at 2-2 before the American struck back.
Serving out game 5, Isner broke the world No.133 and led the set winning 2 straight games, 4-2. Extending his lead further on, world No.23 hammered another winner, 5-2, with a triple game point win and switched the serve. With
just one more win to pack the set, the gigantic American served out one of the last two games to finish of the set, 6-3.
Levelling up the match scores, 1-1, Pospisil ignited the decider as he served out the first game, 1-0, however, the American followed up with a super triple game point winner to level up the scores, 1-1. Battling out games, the
two levelled up again and again, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, and eventually got stuck in a decider tiebreaker.
Pospisil served first for the tiebreaker and led the points table initially, 4-1. However, the American giant pulled back and levelled up the scores at 6-6, then at 7-7, 8-8, and on 9-9. The 21-year-old finally got a break as he
rushed away winning the next two points bagging the tiebreaker, 11-9, the set 7-6(9) and the match with a marvellous tiebreaker finish.
Through into the second round of the ATP World Tour 500, Pospisil now goes head-to-head against the winner of the match between the top seed, David Ferrer and his compatriot, Fernando Verdasco, to battle out the quarter-final seat
of the 2011 Valencia Open 500.
