Vaseline and sunburns?

Okay so I've been searching for solutions to my sunburns. The only thing i had handy was Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly). Many people had different opinions. Some say that i shouldn't use Vaseline because it can lock in the escaping heat on my skin a make the burns worse. Others say that Vaseline is useful because it locks in moisture. So exactly which is it?

You are sort of right.  When you get a burn you need to stop the burning and remove the heat.  

For a normal burn just run water over it for a sunburn soak a cloth in milk(whole if possible) and place over the burn.  The fat in the milk will help to add moisture and the cold will remove the heat.

In 24 hours you can then safely apply any cream or gel of your choice.

By waiting 24 hours you will prevent frying your skin

you should never use vassleen on fresh sunburn because it does hold in the heat,because sunburn is a raidation burn even if you compleatly cool the area with ice it still has the heat(radiation) in it vassileen will only make it worse your best to leave it alone for 24 hours then use alovearer,if your sun burn is very sevear use silver cream on it.

I agree: Aloe Vera. I got a bad sunburn (by mistake) this summer, and it should have peeled in several layers. I used Aloe Vera on it about 3-4 times a day. It stayed red for weeks, but only peeled in one layer in some areas, and isn't even splotchy. I couldn't believe it.

You don't want to use Vaseline. It is too thick, and yes, it would hold in heat. It would soothe, but not heal, like Aloe vera, which is also "cooling". The Native Americans used the Aloe plant for burns, and that is how we found out about it. You can buy the Aloe gel (usually found by the sun products), or use the real plant, and break off a piece and use the gel inside. Both work.
