Vasil Kiryienka signed a three year deal with Team Sky
Vasil Kiryienka managed to secure his future after signing a three-year deal with the British outfit, Team Sky as announced by the team earlier this week calling him one of the most hardworking and versatile rider in the peloton.
The 31-year-old represented several teams since his professional debut with Team OTC Doors back in 2006.
He moved to Team Rietumu-Riga soon after his first appearance at the international scene and spent the remaining part of the 2006 season with the team (June-December).
Kiryienka signed a two-year deal with Tinkoff Credit Systems (2007-08) and moved to Team Caisse d’Epargne for 2009 season.
"I am very happy to be joining Team Sky and I'm confident I will fit in without any difficulty as there are people I've known for a long time in the squad,” he said on the team's website. "Team Sky have enjoyed a fantastic season in 2012”.
The cyclist is known for his time trialling and climbing abilities and some of the major wins of his professional career include two stage victories at the Giro d’Italia along with three first place finishes at the Belarus Time Trial Championships (2002,
05 and 2006).
Team Sky is currently the top UCI World Tour team as it topped the UCI Team’s rankings with a total number of 1767 points, overcoming Team Katusha with a convincing margin of almost 500 points.
Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Team Movistar occupied the third, fourth and the fifth positions with 1197, 1162 and 952 points respectively.
The British team had to bear the loss of Mark Cavendish and Michael Rogers after both the cyclists decided to leave the Tour de France winning team.
Team’s Sports Director Nicolas Portal was delighted to secure the deal and welcomed the cyclist for the season ahead.
“Vasil has won some big races and put in some impressive performances at the very highest level. His stage win at the Giro d'Italia last season was phenomenal, and we were all impressed with the way he was able to battle on and take the victory,” Portal
stated.
Vasil’s final racing plan for the New Year is not yet finalised but it is expected that he will be helping Wiggins at the Giro d’Italia 2013.
