Vatican City question?

I understand that since both Vatican City and San Marino are sovereign countries within Italy, will I be required to present my passport at the border (or whatever) or can I just stroll right in without making a scene?

  1. You do not need to show your passport to enter these countries. In fact you will not need to show your passport even if you travel from one EU country to another (i.e. France to Germany or Italy.)

Switzerland however may need your passport as it is not a member of the EU.

  2. in response to the first answerer when i entered Switzerland with the group i was with we never actually fully stopped at the border into Lucarno or out of the city while we were in italy.  Vatican city only way u know your in it is by the recognizable Saint Peters Basilica

  3. It is impossible to tell that you've crossed the boarder into Vatican City as it shares roads and most services with the city of Rome. There is no border check so to speak.

The same in San Marino, where it just seems as though you are entering another town in Italy. You will see signs and the license plates are different, but that's about it.

  4. I actually think u might have to. I went to Vatican city about a year ago and we were required to present our passports. We even got tthem stamped!!
