Question:

Vatican Museum tour - Can I jump out of the tour to do my own thing?

I've heard joining a tour to see the Vatican Museum is a must because the tour guides are so knowledgeable and they allow you to cut the super long line. However, I notice that many of these tours are 2 hours long. Can I join the tour and then after it is complete, explore the rest of the museum on my own? Or do they require you to leave after the guided tour is complete? I heard it is a one way tour.

  1. Hello,

The tours are about 2 hours long and end in the sistine chapel.  After the tour you are given the option of returning to the museums or going into St. Peter's.  You may stay in the museum until closing if you choose. Just make sure to turn in your headset to the guide before you go back into the museum.

  2. You have to leave. Its only open for 4 or 5 hours a day. They are very efficent in moving you along. The longest stop of the tour is the Sistine Chapel about 10 or 15 minutes.
