Question:

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel-I've faxed the Vatican for a guided tour but haven't received confirmation.

I have faxed them repeatedly and have gotten no reply.

What should I do?

Is it OK if I just go to there and do it on my own?

How long is the line to get in?

Is there a chance I will be turned away?

  2. Hello.

    Well, I have provided a few links in the bottom box to help you out with some indirect but related research, but here is a link to get you to the touristic part of the Vatican; http://www.rome-museum.com/

    You are not going to have much luck with the Vatican in regards to faxing them requests....after all they are a church and not a tourist board. It would be like faxing a mechanic in New York to get information about Broadway shows. They are there to help you with spiritual matters.

    Anyway, to answer your questions, yes...doing it on your own is probably your best bet. This way you can go at your own pace by hurrying through the parts you find boring and slowing down in the parts you love. Besides....once inside, you are totally and completely safe.

    The lines to get in are pretty long, but they go by fast because they are pretty good at keeping them moving. You have to understand that millions of people a year come there, some for spiritual reasons, some just to see the priceless works of art. My suggestion is that you buy a book on the Vatican and read it while in line. Not only will this make your wait quicker, but it will also introduce/educate you in what you will see making your experience that much more enjoyable.

    Yes...there is a chance you will get turned away. You must remember that you are not going into a regular museum, but in a holy place....therefore dress conservatively. This means wear a long skirt, no heels, and a top that covers your shoulders. The more that is covered the better.

    You should go there bright and early.... Less people, more time to tour the grounds and buildings. It is a big place.

    Oh....and remember....do not bring backpacks, large bags, etc.... A f***y pack would be great. The Italian police take protecting the Vatican quite seriously and they do not care who you are and where you are from.

    Hope you have a great time!!! It is hard not to.

    Rick

    Late Entry;

    "But the Vatican itself offers the guided tours of the museums and the sistine chapel. They say they would send confirmation via fax and that fax would be used the day I go to the museum to get in." I believe that the tourism board is responsible for that, not the Vatican itself as they are priests. However...if you are looking to also meet with the pope, then they would provide confirmation.

    Hope this helps.
