Vaughan, Gillespie back Joe Root to fill http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964’ boots – Cricket News Update
Former England skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jason-Neil-Gillespie-c66461 have backed rookie Joe Root to replace recent retiree Andrew Strauss in England’s Test team.
Strauss, the 35-year-old left-handed batsman, bid farewell to all forms of professional cricket on Wednesday, bringing to an end a 100-Test career. Whilst the ECB selectors have already handed the Test captaincy to ODI skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026, Strauss’ replacement at the top of the batting order is yet to be named.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Lumb-c1981 Root is the best fitting option for that.
"I'd love to see Joe get the call and India's not a bad place to get going as an opening batsman. He's a solid player, a solid character and a very good individual to have around. He has all the traits to withstand the pressure of international cricket," said Vaughan, the 37-year-old former top-order batsman.
“Trott is such a calm, consistent influence at three so I would want to keep him there and identify the best opener,” he added further.
Strauss, who guided England to back to back Ashes triumphs at home and in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757.
Root, the 21-year-old Yorkshire-born cricketer, who has just two years of experience at first-class level, boosts an impressive average of 40.57 in 34 games. His tally of 1988 first-class runs includes four centuries and eight half centuries, and a highest score of 222 not out. He was also a star performer during England http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808’ home series against Australia A recently.
Gillespie, the former Australian pacer, who coaches Root at Leeds, said that the right-handed top-order batsman is ready to make his international debut.
"I have absolutely no doubt Joe is ready," said Gillespie. "The kid can play. It's whether the selectors feel he needs a bit more grounding in first-class cricket…but he's a very good prospect,” he added further.
