Dolphins and South Africa batsman Vaughn van Jaarsveld has tested positive for a banned drug sibutramine. Van Jaarsveld has played for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in a couple of ODIs and three T20Is.
According to the South Africa Cricketers' Association (SACA) chief executive Tony Irish, the player had tested positive for the banned substance but he said that the cricketer could have taken the drug by mistake. Sibutramine is an oral anorexiant which is
also an appetite suppressant and was said to be a part of a prescribed medicine for the cricketer.
Speaking to the Reuters, Irish said, "It does not appear to be his fault because it was present in dieting tablets he was prescribed by his doctor called Ciplatrim. Because it is a specified substance, it means it can be taken inadvertently because it is commonly
found in medicines, for instance."
Irish also added that the players association did not consider it to be his fault. He said, “In the circumstances, we hope the SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport will be pretty lenient.”
Van Jaarsveld also had support from both his team Dolphins’ coach and the franchise’s chief executive. Dolphins coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-c60529 Ford said that van Jaarsveld would be dealt with leniently given that he had been prescribed the medicine and declared to the medical
officer who tested van Jaarsveld. Ford added, “It was a prescription from a very well respected medical practitioner. Failing a test is not something to be condoned but in these circumstances the issue is very different.”
The chief executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, Jesse Chellan, also said that they were in touch with the South African cricket board and SACA about the situation.
Chellan also added, “We don’t believe it is his fault, and we would like to sort out the matter so that he can play for us on Friday or at the latest next week.”
