Question:

Vaulted Ceiling A/C problem?

MY kids purchased a fairly new two- story home with

vaulted ceilings (no attic above). During peak usage, the temp inside only lowers to 77 degrees and no further and the a/c runs continuously to maintain that temperature. An a/c

tech said the unit itself was "adequate" for the size of the house and in good working order. Scanning the Web, the problem may be inadequate (or no) foam R-30 roof insulation. Without tearing the roof off, are there any quick fixes? .

  1. An easy way to take some load off you unit would be putting ceiling fans in each room and keeping them running. You use alot less power in a day than you'd think. An electrician told me that a fan running all day on high uses that same amount of power as an A/C unit in one hour.

  2. Nothing Quick....   Perhaps adda vent fan to exhaust the hot air along the ceiling line.

  3. paint a silver reflective coating on the roof shingles.

  4. Unless they have a dedicated unit for the upstairs and a dedicated unit for the downstairs they will never be content.
