Question:

Vauxhall Astra 1.7DTi fuel injection problem?

My Vauxhall has been jumping recently when changing up gear and lo and behold it broke down on the motorway, losing all power and wouldn't start. RAC came out and said it could be the fuel pump and he tapped something near this and it started to work again. Problem is it is likely to cut out again. If it was a fuel injection pump should it not work at all? Could it be something electrical? Any help greatly appreciated!!!

  1. The fuel management computer faulty, The diesel zifera has got the same problem, when accelerating, pushed down on the pedal, the maxium speed is 20mph, you need to turn off engine and then restart, and then try again.

  2. You have a fuel pump and you have fuel injectors , there,s one fuel pump which may be in the fuel tank, you have a fuel injector at each cylinder, you also have a fuel filter that could be clogged up or a fuel injector that is half clogged up , the fuel pump could do that work then not work before it goes of the way out , one of your fuel injectors could do the same thing if it is half clogged up. I would have to say it's most likely the fuel pump ,because the way you said it loose all power . i don't believe a fuel injector would cause it to loose all power.

  3. This is a common problem on the vauxhall astra 1.7 DTI, If you had a diagnostic check you would get a code:

P0251 Injection pump A Circuit Malfunction (Cam/rotor/injector) -present. or on vaux com:

P0251    -8   Spill Valve Malfunction (Injection Pump)

The problem is usually inside in the high-voltage unit, as a bad solder joint.

The only easy cure is to replace the fuel pump.

  4. Could be dirty fuel!

  5. Probably the fuel cut off valve on the pump - check the connection, cleaning it and tightening the nut. The solenoid may be on the way out, but they are cheapish. Does not sound like the pump itself or the injectors.

  6. you have a sticky fuel cut off solinoid[small bit on top of the pupm...it stops fuel from entering the pump,,,it canalso go the other way, keeping it running when its switched off.

    EDIT.

..it all really depends on the type of di pump its fitted with as some are shielded with a big thick metal cage that holds an immobiliser......the bit your looking at is about the size of a torch battery cut in half..its round..it will have a nut on top with a single wire fitted to it...it will most probobly be the bit the AA hit when it started....it may simply need removed and cleaned...DIY if you have the tools or a back street garage will be happpy to do it for a few quid...hope this helps...
