Veenstra, Da Silva and Georgiou ready to shine at 2012 British Open
Grant Veenstra, Andrew Georgiou and Adilson Da Silva will participate in the British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire, scheduled from July 19 to 22.
South African Veenstra, Georgiou and the Brazilian golfer Silva, qualified for the tournament in summer 2012. They grabbed their cards in the African edition of the International Final Qualifying (IFQ) on January 19, 2012.
They displayed amazing performances on the 36-hole qualifier tournament held at Johannesburg, South Africa.
The field comprised of 51 professional golfers and, among them, the three players were in the spotlight.
Veenstra scored 67 strokes in the final-round of the tournament. Carding a 6-under-par and a total of 138 in the two-round tournament helped him qualify for the British Open.
According to Veenstra, it is every player's dream to play prestigious tournaments like the British Open.
“Every golfer wants to play amongst the best, to play at the highest level, and I am so excited for this chance to test myself and play with golf’s best,” Veenstra said.
Da Silva scored a 5-under par and 139, one stroke behind the leader. His tremendous performance was enough to help him get selected for the leading tournament.
“It hasn’t sunk in completely. It’s ridiculous how excited I am to play in The Open. Maybe it will be third-time lucky,” said da Silva, whose opening 68 boosted his position on the leaderboard
Georgiou is one of the youngest golfers in the history of the British Open. His 5-under par score and a tie with Da Silva convinced the officials to issue him a qualifying card for the British Open.
“It has always been my dream to play in an event of this magnitude and to see it coming true is hard to describe. It’s time to head for the UK and play with the best, I can’t ask for more,” Georgiou commented.
The coming British Open is one of those elite tournaments that every golfer seeks to take part in. The environment of Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire is very competitive.
The three qualified golfers are likely to face tough times this year, given the participation of the world's leading players from all over the globe.
