  1. Carrots are a root vegetable so yes you would need something quite deep.Probably 1 =1/2 ft - 2ft deep.  You could make a raised bed on the concrete.  Grab some sleepers, build a really big box for on top of the concrete and put soil, hay, etc in there to raise your vegies.

  2. You might be able to grow onions in a container. My husband did. He thought he'd grow enough to sell and had 10 pots of them however he didn't keep up with the watering. Anyway, since they're not in the ground the dirt in the pots dry out pretty quick and onions need a lot of water. When you plant the onion sets set under the dirt so the top of the onion shows. Water and fertilize. Use Miracle Grow. If you want to grow from seeds you have to sow them in a flat until the plants get about 5 or 6 inches high and then transplant so they're not so crowded. Onions and carrots both grow best in cooler weather. They grow where I live over the winter. You might check with your county extension office to see when they grow in your area. Carrots might grow alright if you have deep containers. Or you could try a shorter variety. Carrots need to be thinned out to have room to grow too.

  3. All I know, it's a good thing to eat your vegetabels.

  4. If you are enjoying it so much, why don't you forget about all the messing about with raised beds, containers and the like and just go for it straight away and dig up the concrete and then buy a few tons of top soil to build it up again. The effort that you would put in now (not to mention water!) would be more than gained back in just a couple of years, and veg is so much better from the ground. Or get an allotment. Either way, enjoy.
