Vegan Double Basses/Bassists?

Do Vegan Double Bassists (stand-up bass) exist in this world? Does any one know of any shops for vegan basses or vegan repair shops? Is it possible to ask a repair person to use a vegan glue if I ask or provide it? I am in a crisis. I would like to continue my studies in the double bass, but if it contradicts my values as a vegan...

  1. AFAIK, the standard glue that instrument builders and repair people use on violin family instruments including bass, is hide glue.  It holds securely, yet the glue joint can be loosened and taken apart if necessary for repairs by applying heat to the joint.

I understand that there is something called "aliphatic resin" glue (aka "woodworkers glue") that I'm guessing may be vegan (if its made of some kind of resin) -- its water soluble and can be softened with heat like hide glue.

My suggestion is that you talk to a trained luthier who works on violin family instruments and find out what your options are.
