Vegan Family Dilemma?

Hi I am in kind of a bad situation that I need advice with. Up until my boyfriend and I met he lived at home with his parents which is fine because he was only 22 but when we got together it just inspired him to be independent and spread his wings. He moved out and after a year we moved in together, which of course they hated, and recently we bought our first home together which is supposed to be a happy time but his parents put down every move he makes. Just recently he decided to go Vegan because I am and he truly believes in it. He has been 100% vegan for a month now and i am so proud of him. ANyway, his mother completely took it as an insult or something and then said bad things about me. SHe is literally mad about the situation. i never liked his parents anyway but this just pushed me even further away. I really want to confront her and say something because I am not controlling and we make decisions together but in no way have a MADE him change his life.what would you do?

Honestly, you should let it go.  You are adults independent of his parents.  You've just bought a house for goodness sake!   He has made a life choice that not everyone is going to agree with.  If anything needs to be said it should be by your boyfriend stating the facts and setting boundaries including her keeping her unwarranted comments to herself.  Really it seems his mother is jealous and upset that she doesn't have control or influence in his life anymore and she's "lost" him to you.  Don't trip.  It's her problem not yours.  Let it go.

I am not vegan or vegetarian.  I do not meat everyday.  I have friends & family members that are and we have no bad blood between us.  It's not an insult to us and we make accommodations at gatherings for their meals.  Sometimes we even make it all vegan or vegetarian so they are not uncomfortable if we choose to eat meat that day.

you need to tell her that he changed on his own! and talk to her about what makes her dislike you so much. my opinion is that she probably is mad cuz you took her "little boy" away from her. tell her that being vegan is wayy healthier and a vegan diet can even reverse heart disease, and that being a vegan saves over 100 animals a year from slaughter houses and dairy farms. and explain how much animals suffer from being in a slaughter house, like how theyre kept before they are killed (in a cage so small they cant turn around) and that after a cow is unable to produce milk, its slaughtered. if that doesnt get her, then shes cold.

I do not think that you should let it go, I think that you should try and be on good terms with your BF's mum because it will make things a lot easier. It is also going to upset your BF if you and his mum are rivals. I am not saying to try and become best friends but to try and get onto good/neutral terms because it will make life a whole lot easier. And if she stays stubborn and refuses to co-operate then people cannot say you didn't try!

From my experience, you sound a little self absorbed.  "...he decided to go vegan because I am...",  "...I never liked his parents...".  So I'm not so sure you are as level headed as  you think you are.  Maybe you should take a step back from the situation, talk with your husband about it a little bit, and maybe be a little more generous to his Mother.  I mean, Mothers are supposed to be a bit protective about their children, right? So chill, take a deep breath and concentrate on your husband and your happiness.  Other wise, call the lawyers now.
