Vegan food restrictions?

I found out about a month ago that vegans can't eat gummy bears. Anyone know what some other common foods are that are restricted for vegans?

  1. Most gummy bears have gelatin in them, which is why vegans (and vegetarians) cannot have them.  But there are vegan gummy bears by Edward & Sons, an organic products company.

You need to look at ingredients, rather than worry about which foods are restricted.  www.veganwolf.com has a list of animal-based ingredients.  I tend to worry about the biggies--milk-based ingredients, egg-based ingredients, meat-based ingredients, bee products, and other insect ingredients such as shellac and food/confectioners glaze--and let some of the others go.

  2. Gummie bears have gelatin in them, derived from animals.

If you want a list of common foods that ARE vegan, here's a nice site

If you make mistakes, don't worry about it. Simply avoiding animal foods is a big help :-)

  3. I think being a vegan is more than being a vegetarian.  Like a vegetarian, you can't eat fish and meat.  But also, being a vegan, I think you couldn't eat any product that comes from animals.  So instead of milk, you drink soy milk and don't eat dairy products like ice-cream and cakes

  4. I had read on another post that Twizzlers are vegan.  I don't like them-  so I don't know if they are or not.

  5. Did'nt understand your questions

  6. Your best bet is to check ingredients lists (you get faster as time goes on, I promise).

Common products which often contain animal products are:

Chewy lollies (Gelatin, same as gummy beats)

Soaps and other cosmetics (Animal fat)

Beer, Wine and Cider (Processed using, fish and egg products)

    Sugars (Processed using bone char)

    Breads (Whey, milk solids)

(Note: there are vegan options for all these products, you just need to do a little research and find out which brands are ok)

A full list  of animal products to be aware of can be found at:

And... my favourite, an A-Z animal ingredients list that you can download onto your ipod can be found at:

The staggering amount of animal ingredients found in everyday products can be overwhelming, especially for a new vegan. Don't stress too much about it, just try to inform yourself, and slowly work animal friendly alternatives into your everyday life

Remember that veganism is about giving a d**n, not being perfect.
