Vegan in Italy?

I'm currently visting Italy and only eating at restaurants, not shopping at grocery stores. Does anyone know whether the pasta usually contains eggs? Food or restaurant suggestions would be welcome, especially for Florence. Thanks!

  1. Pasta = EGG Noodles

I hope you like salads if you can't have eggs.

  2. I've never been to Italy, buuuut, I see plenty of pasta "made in Italy" and there are no eggs in it.  I worked at an Italian pasta restaurant (not in Italy) and there was no egg in the pasta.  An acquaintance of mine owns an Italian restaurant, and they do not use eggs in their pasta either... so... perhaps it's a regional thing.  I'm pretty sure that in Italy there is pasta, then there is egg pasta.  Different type of pasta.

Hi there. Thanks for your question. In short, we didn't find it to be an issue. When we had pasta, it was semolina pasta, mostly in the form of Penne, and it wasn't ever made with eggs. There was EGG pasta/noodles on some menus, but - obviously - we didn't order those! :) So, sorry I don't have a more interesting answer; we just didn't encounter that issue. Hope that helps. Have a fantabulous time!!! :)

  3. Florence is said to be pretty vegan friendly. I found this website, it has a list of vegan & vegetarian friendly restaraunts in Florence, Italy:

Also someone on a vegan chat board reccomended a restaraunt called La vie en rose. They said it was mostly vegetarian but had a lot of vegan options.

I also know that there are a few markets in Italy that usually have fresh fruit and veggies. There is one by the San Croce church that is filled with fruit and bread. And you can always make a stop at the local bakery to pick up some fresh bread or pastries. As for their pasta, sometimes it does contain eggs but you can ask the restaraunt just to be sure.

Good luck and have a wonderful time! :)

PS. Didn't you have another account? I remember you being a top contributor.

  4. um thats basically IMPOSSIBLE!!!! and in florence too, and yes the pasta is made with egg and the salads are lettuce and olive oil, you won't get much fill from that! i would tough it out for the time being there or you will have to end up shopping at the store for food

  5. Most Italian paste do not contain eggs.

What could be a more wonderful experience than eating every day in a restaurant in Italy? It's like being a pauper suddenly waking up in a bank vault. Not a good time to restrict your diet!

In Florence, don't miss the ribollito and, of course, the bistecca fiorentina. My only criticism of Florentine food is the ancient custom of baking bread without salt. It's pretty tasteless, and when you consider how good most Italian bread is, you wonder why the Florentines are so heavily committed to custom.
