Did you give up being a vegan and go vegetarian when you got pregnant? Please explain

The reason why I am asking is this article that I read and some of the moms talk about people questioning their vegan diets while they were pregnant

(Orange posted it originally and I thought it was great!)

(by the way, this is meant to be a friendly response, nothing mean or spiteful please!!)

  1. Not my experience, but my sister's: she had already had one healthy vegan pregnancy, but with  her last pregnancy, at the age of 42, she was having a very difficult time.

One day she walked into the supermarket, thought 'If I don't eat that chicken sandwich I'll vomit!', bought it and ran to the car tearing off the packaging.

After that she ate meat pretty regularly throughout the pregnancy and felt better. After the birth she went back to being vegan.

I'm just relating what happened; I'm vegan myself. Both babies were healthy and are strapping lads.

The body wants what it wants, I guess.

  2. Yes, I did.  I developed a very strong adversion for all things tofu while I was pregnant so I went back to eating eggs for protien.  I was still okay with soy cheese, however!  I think a vegan diet, if balanced, is okay while pregnant.  The key is to do what feels best for your body and baby and to be healthy.

  3. I was actually vegetarian when I became pregnant w/my first and as a result of being worried he wouldn't get enough of the right stuff (being tired or sick and sometimes certain foods didn't seem appealing from being pregnant) I decided to go back to meat......I do think unless you know that you will have the fortitude to do it the right way, you should stick w/a diet that will insure the baby's health. That said, there are plenty of healthy vegan mother's to be.

  4. I ended up ahving to start eating chicken and fish when i was pregnant after being a vegan for 5 years because my daughter was not getting any nutrients when i was pregnant and i almost lost her. so be careful and make sure you go tot he doctor and have them do some checkin up.

Now my daughter is 5 and as healthy as can be io allowed her to eat meat in the past few years and have slowly cut it all out again, and now we are both going vegetarian and eventually back to vegan.
