Question:

Vegan restaurants in DC mall area?

I'm going to do the tourist thing in DC this weekend. Any recommendations on where I can eat - doesn't have to be a special vegan restaurant, just someplace I can get a salad or vegetable sandwich is fine too.

  1. JS is right vegdc.com is a great resource.    Plenty of recommendations.  From looking at the list of restaurants on the mall the site lists Mitsitam Café at theNational Museum of the American Indian.  Never been there but that would be the closest.

Geographically I would look to Capital Hill and Gallery China Town those are closest to the Mall.

  2. There aren't a lot of options for eating near the national Mall, sadly, much less vegan eating.  I've been to Mitsitam at the Museum of the American Indian, and while it has good vegetarian and vegan options, it's very expensive.

Your best options:  Take the Green or Yellow line to Gallery Place and got to Ella's Wood-Fired Pizza.  You can get your pizza with Follow Your Heart cheese on request.  There's also a California Tortilla and a Chipotle in the area, and both have vegan options.

Or go to Columbia Heights and check out Sticky Fingers Bakery.

I think there are a few options along Pennsylvania Avenue in the Capitol Hill/Eastern Market areas, but I haven't tried them yet.

Best thing to do is check out www.vegdc.com and look at restaurants.

  3. Check out VegDC.com restaurant pages (which sort locations by neighborhood). You'll have many good choices to choose ... from fast food, Asian and Ethiopian fare and even high-end cuisine. There are also several fresh, organic markets and co-ops in the region as well. Enjoy!
