Question:

Vegans, help!?

I have to make a vegan dish for class, so I've decided to make brownies. Naturally, my brownies aren't going to have meat in them, but they also can't have any dairy products.

I've substituted soy milk for regular milk, but I need a substitute for butter. I know margarine is one, but is it vegan? What is it made of? Any vegans know?

  1. i am a new vegan and i keep seeing in a book for vegan living ( the complete idiot's guide to vegan living ) nonhydrogenated margarine .

so i hope that helps !

    :)

  2. BriarKat posted a link to a great vegan brownie recipe.  I use this exact recipe all the time.  And you don't need soy milk or vegan butter/margarine.

Your typical grocery store margarine isn't vegan - most margarines contain whey protein.

Earth Balance buttery spread is an AMAZING butter alternative.  You can find it at most health food stores.

    Happy baking!

Normal margarine is not vegan as it contains dairy products, use the website above for a vegan margarine!

I use Pure Organic soya spread but I am not sure if you can get t in the USA.

  4. Try to get either Willow Run sticks or Earth Balance buttery sticks.  Both are really great for baking, at least in my experience.

  5. Generally if you look hard enough you can find a "margarine" that works for vegans. Right now I'm using Winn-Dixie Spread (48% Vegetable Oil Spread).

You want to make sure that whatever you get has no whey or buttermilk in it. The ingredients on mine look like this:

    WATER, SOYBEAN OIL, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED

SOYBEAN OIL, SALT, VEGETABLE MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, SOY

LECITHIN, POTASSIUM SORBATE AND CITRIC ACID (PRESERVATIVES),

ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, LACTIC ACID, BETA CAROTENE (COLOR), VITAMIN A

    PALMITATE.

    CONTAINS: SOY

Admittedly there's probably healthier stuff out there, but when you're in a pinch, something like this will do nicely.

  6. Margarine is Chemicals and c**p, not natural.

God gave us cows to milk and to kill and eat.

oh, by the way I'm NOT a vegan and never plan to be.

oh, use LARD oops  that Pig Fat  ; D

  7. Margarine can be made with animal or vegetable fats.

    Vegan butters:

    -Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread

    -Soy Garden Natural Buttery Spread

-Smart Balance 37% Light Buttery Spread -- make sure you get this specific one. (Other Smart Balances are NOT vegan)

    Good luck.

  9. Are you aware that chocolate has milk in it? Those probably aren't going to be any good. Oh, and you can't put eggs in them.
