  1. Animals do not synthesize B12, only bacteria are responsible for the creation of cobalamin.

The f***s of many animal species are excellent sources of B12 but they aren't the most sanitary. Such bacteria are found in the human digestive system but said to be located in segments that do not absorb B12. The human body recycles B12 extremely well and actual illness caused by "deficiency" is quite rare.

  2. B12 doesn't have to come from animals.

I am vegan and I get my B12 by consuming 2-8oz. servings of Silk soy milk everyday.  1 serving has 50% of a day's worth of B12.

  3. No, B12 comes from bacteria and other one-celled organisms.  It's in their poo.

  4. The need for B12 is low but can be found in nutritional yeast.  Many soy milks are also fortified with B12.  1 glass contains 50% daily value

  5. That is not actually correct. While animal products are a source of B12, there are vegan sources also, produced from bacteria cultures.

P.S. - Also many vegans do not take supplements.

  6. No, B12 does not come from animal protein. It comes from micro-organisms, primarily bacteria. Animals get B12 by eating food and soil contaminated with these micro-organisms, and therefore it ends up getting stored in their system. However, the vegan vitamin supplements do not get the B12 from animals, they use it directly from the source, the micro-organisms.

  7. B12 is not an animal product.  It's synthesized by a bacteria that lives in the guts of animals (hence why it appears in animal foods) and in healthy soil.  The B12 in supplements is produced by the exact same bacteria, just cultured on a vegan-friendly substrate instead of in the gut of a cow.

  8. B12 is actually a microorganism that animals absorb when they eat food grown in soil.  Many vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12, also called (cyano)cobalamin, as are many vegan vitamins.  However, humans need a very small amount, and the body stores it well.
