Vegans and Vegetarians!!! WHAT WAS THE MOST RUDE THING YOU'VE ENCOUNTERED SINCE GOING VEGGIE?

I just want to know since going vegan or vegetarian what is the meaniest thing anyone has done or said to you in spite of your veggie choice. For example the worst thing that happened to me was when my boyfriend and I went to his parents house for Father's Day and his dad and brother in law made sure the hunting channel was on EXTRA LOUD so we could hear everything that was going on. THen at the dinner table they would make cow noises as they ate their steaks. Than they made comments about dead animals for the rest of the visit. I couldn't believe how overwhelmed I was with As*holes and ignorance. What was something that really got to you??

  1. Every time I see my brother and we eat a meal together he normally has meat and he always says "I love animals! They are delicious!" or he holds the meat up to my face. I also hate when people ask me if I like meat, dairy, or eggs.

  2. nothing other than in this forum.

and , to be honest, this forum doesn't count

  3. I know you asked for an example of what has happened to me personally but my experience relates to a friend who is vegetarian. We were invited by our boss to a cookout. It was mentioned to him that my friend/co-worker was a vegetarian. Our boss, like yours is a rude/dominating/brainless cad..to say the least. All the food served that day he had made certain contained meat and he made joks about vegetarians, acting as if he weasn't aware of my friends choice to not include meat in his diet.   My friend was one step ahead of him. He brought his own food to prepare on the grill. WhIle the boss was doing burgers etc he just waltzed over and said " How lucky ! I It looks like there is room for my  kabobs on the grill. " as he laid them on next to the meat immediately questioning the boss about his thoughts on a recent baseball game he knew the boss attended. My friend  had brought veggie kabobs on squers all ready to just pop on the grill . The boss "accidently" dropped it on the ground taking it off the grill. My friend said not to worry as he had brought several so he could share and brought out more he had in a cooler in his car. The look on the boss's face was worth a million bucks. He had also brought a lentil salad that was so delicious the boss's wife asked for the recipe.

My friend said later he knew the boss would be nonsensitive to his situation and was not going to let him get the upper hand.

  4. If I go to a restaurant that I'm not familiar with (usually chosen by family) I always have to ask, "I'm a vegan, what are my choices?"  And I usually get, "You're a what?  What's that?"  Which is fine, it's one more opportunity to enlighten someone I suppose.  But the worst was when I asked that question and I got that reply with a face that I can't even describe, kind of like I was a creature from the depths of h**l and the server actually ditched our table and gave it to another server who was happy to help me out.  Needless to say, he got an extra good tip that night and I hope that he let her know that! :)

  5. The only rudeness I ever encounter is from ignorant trolls on here.

Sure, I've been to restaurants and parties and family reunions where there was nothing I could eat, but that's not intentional, and you quickly learn to check menu options ahead of time, and bring your own food to gatherings.

  6. They are his family not yours (not yet I suppose) they know better than you how to interact with their son/brother-in-law. If that offended you, don't go next year. By the way, the day was for the Father not for the son.

  7. Oh, just the usual c**p...

"Haven't you ever heard of the food chain?"

"Animals are there to be eaten."

"It's not murder when it's an animal."

I try not to pay too much attention to avoid killing anyone :)

  8. the worst was at a restaurant when the server literally stood at our table and made fun of me for being a vegetarian after i ordered a tofu dish.  when i ordered it he responded, "ew, you really eat that stuff?  why?" and I replied, "i don't eat meat, and it's a good replacement."  he stood there and mocked me for several minutes.  i got up and left.  even after i walked away he continued to make fun of my choice to my husband, who promptly shut him up with a few digs at his own diet (the server was quite overweight).  it was awful, and ruined what should have been a romantic night out.  we left him no tip and complained to the manager, who did nothing.  then i complained on their corporate site, which never even responded.  i was really, really upset.  we obviously don't go there anymore.

  9. 1) When people rub that they eat meat in my face, as if they REALLY think that that will make me regret the fact that i stopped eating meat and somehow magically make me want to go back to that lifestyle again..

    2) When people think that i became a vegetarian solely for the image...

    3) When people mistake me for being Vegan

    and...

    4) when people mention the whole "if a tree fell in a forest, would anyone hear it?" question...

P.s  my answer ..."only if one is smart enough to listen.." =]

  10. That's so ignorant and mean that they did that to you, i'm really sorry to hear it.

I've been a vegetarian since i was six, so i'm used to the whole

    "What- you're a vegetarian? WHY?!"

"It's the food chain, the circle of life"

"Yeah, but if we didn't kill animals they'd overpopulate us"

"It's not like I'M the one who killed it"

Etc. My brother probably bugs me the most about it, he allllways comments on how dumb he thinks it is.

But when i was little, my "Friend" was like "Omg, Avery, try these noodles, aren't they tasty?" So i did, and then a bunch of my friends started laughing and told me it had meat in it..

And I was at this BBQ one time and i got a veggie burger and this guy was like "Oh, do you want cheese on it?" And i said "Yes please" and then he opens the grill, and peels the cheese off a pile of meat it had been grilling on.. so i just walked away.

I've also gone to a friends house, and they gave me their chicken soup..and her dad claimed he had "scooped the meat out" but there was still lots in there..

And there's also the people on here, who always have to voice their opinions...

  11. I agree with Michael H, the only place anyone has ever been rude to me about my being vegan is YA.  It's not easy being vegan, but then nothing worth doing ever is.

They were obviously only doing this to get to you, if you show no reaction they won't do it.

  12. when people say im unmanley for not eating "man food" like steak hotdogs and porkchops

  13. There was a commercial here in Australia for Australia Day. And it basically said that it's unAustralian to not eat lamb on Australia Day. I was infuriated. This is the reason I don't watch TV.

As far as I'm concerned, if being vegan is what makes me unAustralian, then there's a lot worse problems in the world that patriotism.

I added the video to the sources list.

  14. I personally think it's rude when people tell me I am wrong for being a vegetarian.  Most of the time they are just being defensive.  They haven't done any of the research I have done.

My Mother-in-law also pretty much makes sure there is nothing for my husband or I to eat at her house.  She even purposely takes us to restaurants where she knows there will be nothing for us to eat.  I have eaten french fries for dinner several times.  She just does it to be rude.

On the other hand, at my Mother's house my parents always make sure there is plenty of stuff for us to eat.  She made us hearty tomato sauce with tons of fresh vegetables over whole grain pasta.  She made that especially for us because they don't normally eat whole grain pasta.  She also bought a lot of fresh fruit and cut it up nice for us.  She made vegan rice pudding.  She already drinks soy milk so she has that for us too.

  15. When I first became vegetarian, my Mom would occasionally slip meat or meat broth into foods.  Really pathalogical.  It was after I had moved out for college, so I just started bringing my own food when I would come home.

  16. i dont eat meat because i think it is sad to kill alive animals..just think that someone killed us and ate us..how would we feel??

  17. If you're serious about this man, look long and hard at how he behaved while this was going on. Did he watch out for you, or side with the family members who were being rude? I'm not a vegetarian but that kind of behavior is beyond the pale, and if your boyfriend wouldn't stand up for you, it's not a good sign.

People can be astonishingly rude over food choices: slipping allergens  into food they are giving to someone with allergies (because they don't "believe in" the allergy), remarking about its fat or sugar content, taking offense at people who don't (or do) eat meat. Interesting what a touchy subject food can be.

  18. it was a sunday and we were eating as a family and my house.

my 2 brothers and sister were there.

they were eating meat which is fine, i've gotten used to it and whatever. my brother reaches to me and put the meat in my mouth. i didn't talk to him for a week and he still won't learn. he's a f*g and i hate him for that..

    (p.s. i don't mean f*g like that)

  19. I guess I'm just easy to tease, because every time I step outside the door, people are having a go at me.

For example, the other night husband and I and some friends went out to dinner at Macaroni Grill.  They have some great vegan options there, it's a nice restaurant.  Anyway they have these paper tablecloths you can write on.  Everyone of course was teasing me and asking hard questions, which is normal and I'm fine with it.

My husband and his friend started to draw something on the tablecloth but I couldn't see because it was hidden behind a plate.  When they moved the plate, I saw that they had drawn a baby calf with it's hoof chained with a very short chain.  They had further drawn it's neck being slit, so blood was pouring out.

I thought that was pretty mean, even if it was only a drawing.  Way to ruin my meal for god sakes.

  20. Oh that's horrible what they did to you!...some people are idiots.

I've had a lot of instances really. I live in a very conservative farming town so not being a bloody carnivore makes me pretty close to the devil I guess. I've been called "weird". My character has been attacked. A family member called my decision "stupid, and pointless". I've had people shove meat in my face before. They get so offensive about it; I think they just know that eating meat is wrong and they feel guilty, I don't know. Just keep your head high. You made a good choice!
