Question:

Vegans and bugs in soap? ?

Vegans always have very strong opinions about everything and even though I never say anything to them about what they eat they feel the need to try and make me look at "puss in boots" pictures of the animals I eat.

Now, I was told by a Vegan not to buy a soap because they might have used innocent bugs in it or something like that.

I realized this person did drive to the store, if they are so concerned about harming bugs do they not notice when driving in their car on the roads how many bugs they kill just driving to buy the organic soap that doesn't harm bugs?

  1. How many vegans do you have harassing you about your soap?  I live in Los Angeles and I don't know anyone who is a vegan except me (not personally anyway) and it would never occur to me to accost someone about his/her soap preferences.  Are you sure these are real vegans?  Could they be the "vegans in your head"?

  2. I would be more worried about the animal fat in your soap, but since you eat all that stuff I don't see a problem rubbing animal fat and crushed bugs all over your skin.

I think you either met a new vegan who feels that they must let the world in on their secret or just a pushy one.  However, that is not the norm.  I know a few vegans and I am myself and none of us act that way with meat-eaters.

  3. I am Vegan, and those kinds of vegans you describe can be a pain in the behind sometimes. There is NO such thing as 100% vegan. If you drive a car, guess what? Your tires contain animal byproducts. If you have photographs, they too contain animal parts also. I could go on forever, but I would probably bore you to death. The point is, you try and do your best, and that is what it is all about.

  4. Any time you start a sentence with "[insert name of group] always..." you run the risk of sounding really ignorant.  It's lazy thinking that leads to generalizations like that.  I don't ever, EVER talk about my choice to go vegan over a meal, let alone try and show people pictures of animals while they're eating.  I'm not an adolescent, for one thing.  And I couldn't give a flying f**t in space what kind of soap *you* use.

Now, what was your QUESTION?  This is a barely disguised rant.

In that case, your question would be best directed at the particular individuals who you believe are behaving in a hypocritical manner.  The mere fact that you're taking the behavior of those people and asking vegans at large to justify it backs up my assertion that you're making a generalization.  I've read your opening sentence several times and it's quite clear to me that you're attributing this behavior to vegans in general, not to an individual or two (because I highly doubt that you've encountered more than that.)  Do you not see that saying "vegans always do this" and "vegans always do that" would be offensive to vegans who don't, in fact, do what you're accusing us of?
