Vegans and vegetarians, please settle this disagreement I'm having..?

Can vegans take fish-oil pills?

I said no, because fish-oil is a product of fish, which is an animal.

The person with whom I disagree says that, as a vegan, she can take fish-oil pills because her doctor gave them to her and he's aware that she is vegan, thus fish-oil must be vegan fare.

Your thoughts?

  1. NO WAY! I was vegan for a while and the answer is NO! You are right... its a product that comes from an animal so you can't!

Tell her that I am a Nurse (true) and Doctors are NOT always right! What do they know about vegans? He probably eats meat! lol

  2. no vegan means not to consume or use any animal product no exeptions

  3. There are several different types of vegetarians, so depending on what level or type of vegetarian your friend is would depend on the answer. She can't call herself a "Vegan" and take fish oil. That would make her a Pesco-Vegetarian.

The different types of vegetarians are generally classified as follows:

    A) "Total Vegetarians" eat only plant food. They do not eat *any* animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey.

    B) "Vegans" not only omit all animal products from their diets, but they also eliminate them from the rest of their life. Vegans use nothing from animals, such as leather, wool, and silk.

    C) "Lacto-Vegetarians" will include dairy products into their diet of plant food.

    D) "Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarians" eat both eggs and dairy products.

    E) "Pesco-Vegetarians" include fish into their diets.

    F) "Pollo-Vegetarians" eat poultry, such as chicken, turkey, and duck.

  4. Both Vegans and vegetarians cannot take fish-oil pills because the animal had to die for the product.

  5. No, vegetarians and vegans don't take fish oil.  It's from FISH, which is a big no-no on veg*an diets.

Either she or her doctor is an idiot.  And "my doctor gave them to me, so it must be okay" is the most ridiculous thing.  Most doctors know bupkes about nutrition.

She should take ground flax seed for flax oil.  And make sure she's not using gelatin capsules.

  6. LOL, no way.

Not even vegetarians take fish oil.

There is no way that a vegan person would take fish oil as there are many other ways to get Omega-3 including DHA.

Silk soy milk and Minute Maid even offer products that contain vegan DHA .

DHA is made by algae, not fish, so there is no excuse to take fish oil.

  7. As much as I hate to judge another person's habits I have to say that I don't believe the person you're talking to is a geniune strict vegetarian.

A vegan would more than likely get sick ( nauseous) if they shocked their body by drinking fish oil.  A real vegan would opt for Flax Seed oil instead.  This person is probably just faking a front.  Fish oil pills would more than likely be encapsulated in gelatin.  That's a double no no.

Edit- Sorry about your account getting suspended by the way.

I hope that won't stop you from posting in GWS.

  8. I have to say no, a vegan cannot take them.  The same minerals and vitamins can be found in other foods and supplements.

  9. it depends on you. some are more strict than others on subjects like that. you decide for yourself

  10. Fish oils come from fishes. Fishes are animals. Vegetarians don't eat animals. Vegans definitely shouldn't eat products that contains anything from animals. So, its definitely a big NO.

  11. if she takes fish oil then shes not a true vegan. Vegans do not take any form of animal products. Being a doctor does not make her doc an expert on the vegan diet.

  12. fish-oil...

    FISHHHHHHHHHH

    fishies are animals...

lol thats one mean/S****y doctor the goes to.

  13. She could take flax seed oil and get similar benefits.

  14. No such thing as a vegetarian or vegan. They take vitamins to supplement their bodies with what they're not ingesting. Some of these vitamins can -only- be derived from animal matter.

Therefore, whether they like it or not, they're eating animals.

  15. Doctors are not god. and they do not know everything. Find for a better medical practitioner who knows some varieties of animal based and herbal alternative supplements. Either way, you are paying your money.

  16. fish-oil is indeed a byproduct of a fish, therefore by the definition of a vegan they should not take the fish oil pills

  17. it depends on how you think of fish and the fish products.

would a vegetarian eat fish eggs? or fish skin?

theres no difference. so in my opinion, no, veggies/vegans cant take fish oil pills.

the fish still had to be killed to get the oil didnt they?

  18. thats pathetic!

  19. im a vegetarian!! haha!! but yer

    if ur vegan

    im pretty sure

    they cant take fish-oil pills

    coz its an animal product

    if im correct YAY!!

  20. No, they are made of fish and fish is an animal. Neither vegans or vegetarians should take fish oil pills.
