What are some things that a person would be surprised to learn that animal products are used in them?

Do all vegans completely avoid all animal products at all costs or do you give some leeway on certain products?

Let's avoid the obvious such as honey, butter, lanolin, dairy products, etc.

I would like to learn of some completely different things that aren't commonly known!

  1. jello and I think marshmallows.

  2. Products like Twinkies, HoHos and other "vending machine" products sometimes have animal shortenings listed in the ingredients.

Check and read carefully before indulging.

I personally am not a vegan but a lacto (and sometimes ovo) vegetarian. But I avoid those vending machine things!

  3. Well I'm not vegan, but I do know a website with a list of not vegan things. If in doubt, read the ingredients list on the food to see if it contains any of these things. Or, if your not sure about an ingredient, just look on this website before buying.

Also, beware leather, suede, etc. Boars hair brushes, paint brushes, etc. are not vegan.

    And, http://www.peta2.com/stuff/s-cf.asp

Very important. Make sure your cosmetics, shampoos, etc are cruelty free too. Hope you find this helpful!

  4. Some wines and beers are processed with isinglass, which is a substance obtained from the swimbladders of fish.

  5. Pudding/Jello/Custard

    Anything made from gelatin

  6. I read labels obsessively, and I was stunned to see that one of these energy water-type drinks has cochineal in it.  Ick.  Confectioners' or food glaze is nonvegan--it's an insect secretion.  Some candies have carmine (cochineal) and/or gelatin in it.  Neccos and those conversation hearts have gelatin.  Sob.

I avoid the most obvious animal ingredients that are definitely animal-based and use a little leeway on the less obvious.

I rarely buy wine, and usually only for cooking, but I don't drive myself nuts looking for organic wine.

  7. Cheese is usually not vegetarian.  It contains rennet which comes from the stomachs and intestines of animals (usually calves).

  8. Many liquid gel pain relievers are NOT vegan.

  9. CARROTS

  10. anything processed.. as in canned foods,  junk foods, snacks,  puddings, gelatin based items..   breads,  cake mixes,  any mixes...   frozen foods.. processed meats.. processed vegetable meals.. t.v. dinners...

diet foods..    sodas....   juices from concentrate...

just  read the labels.. and  jot down information you find on those labels and  research them online and find out exactly what that ingredient is based upon.

over the counter medications.. vitamins... any medication.. any product on any shelf in general from toothpaste to duct tape.

mostly everything has an animal base.   why? it's and old format and still the cheapest.    most corporations aren't just going to drop their slacks  to suit a vegan...   just that simple.

the changeover would be costly,  most companies from the  farms to the pharacudicals rely on one another for processing.

  11. Carmine. Crushed red beetles. It's found in some yogurts such as activia.
