  1. Dig it over.

  2. This late in the year rules out many vegetables.  The bed has to be set up and tilling while adding compost is the best start.  Plastic sheets will help hold in moisture and control weeds.  You will need to but plants from someplace like WalMart and then plant them in small holes poked in the plastic.  Tomato plants will need to be 18" high and in good shape.  The same goes for green peppers.  Lettuce, beans, and peas done for the season.  Carrots and asparagus will be ready next year.  Beets work into cold weather.  Potatoes will make it but will be small this year.  Also done for 2008 are cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, spinach,  and broccoli.  Cabbage will grow but be small.

  3. www.walterreeves.com     walter reeves is THE ga gardener. He has a radio show ( and web site) on sat am 6am - 10 am edt @ wsb750am.com You can call him on any questions you have concerning veggie plant or any other plant  or e-mail him at gardenradio@yahoo.com. The one thing I would suggest is mix a lot of organic matter with existing soil. A soil test is a good idea ( finds PH of soil) not sure what else.Once you see you 1st tomatoe, squash or whatever else you decide to grow and get to taste the FRUITS of your labor. You will be hooked on gardening, and also saves on grocery bill ENJOY

  5. Good question; To grow good veggies there is plenty of preparation. You may not have a lot of choice where your plot is but in brief. plenty of sun shine. Not to hot or dry. The soil will produce best if it is dug 200-300 mm deep and is 'fryable'. that is, slightly sandy . plenty of compost and decomposed vegetation. Books will teach you much more, eg. the PH should be about 7. but don't be put off with all that. Dig, plant, enjoy. I  try to keep notes on what worked  and what didn't. Read up on what time of year which veggies are planted. That saves disappointment. All the best.
