Question:

Vegetarian, going to start eating seafood.....?

I've been vegetarian for a year and a half, no meat, no-straight dairy (drinking milk, cheese) and i want to start eating seafood. I live in Louisiana, so it would be easier for me to eat out.

I would eat mostly shellfish, like crawfish, shrimp, maybe crab.

How do i start?

Do I have to eat it little bit by little bit for my body to adjust?

Or can I just go ahead and eat it as a main course?

P.S. My body's very sensitive...

  1. If you're going to eat it, just eat it. Nothing is going to happen because you didn't eat animal flesh for a year.

If you are already naturally sensitive to foods though, follow your usual precautions.

  2. I love shellfish and eat various kinds often. Louisiana is a wonderful place for that, with a great tradition of seafood cuisine. You can't get jambalaya or crawdads as good anywhere else.

Shellfish are great not only as a main course, but in soups and salads as well.

  3. I would say to go lightly. As others have stated, a lot of shellfish is not good for any person.

Also, consider that some of the sauces may cause sensitivities too, since you may have been avoiding these too while you were vegetarian.

Just use common sense and you should be all right. Good luck with this. You might want to also try asking some of your favorite restaurants to include some vegetarian dishes, or ask if they would make yours vegetarian instead.

  4. Why would you ask a question like this to the v/v forum? You will get sick to your tummy until your system adjusts to your new diet.

  5. why would you want to eat unclean waste filter sea going cockroaches???  didn't you see the news bulletin the other day warning about lobster??

    not kosher...unclean...unhealthy...

if you are going to eat fish the make sure it is fresh water with fins and scales....

  6. Seafood can contain toxins and it is a high risk factor for food poisoning so be careful. I'm not saying this to scare you- just be careful that you don't eat cheap seafood. Buy it as fresh as possible. With seafood, make sure it doesn't smell off because that's a sign of spoilage. By the way I think it would be cheaper to be vegetarian but hey.

It's ultimately your decision to eat what you fancy.

  7. You need to slowly work into eating seafood whenever you want. Your body doesn't know seafood anymore; if you just go into eating it all the time you will definitely get sick.

  8. Not trying to preach, but seafood can be quite unhealthy, especially some of the ones you mentioned.  In addition to the nutrition problems another poster listed, seafood is notorious for bioaccumulating toxins.  Things like dioxins, mercury, pesticides, PCBs, and flame retardants build up in the flesh of these organisms.  The scavenging nature of things like crabs and crawfish accelerate this effect.

  9. Just eat it and deal with the consequences.

  10. You DO realize that shellfish are not that healthy for you?  They are extremely high in cholesterol  and "richer" than fish.  You might start with some grilled fish first
