Bonjour!

I am a vegetarian and will be in Paris this summer for one month.

Could anyone suggest their favorite vegetarian eateries/dishes?

Nothing too expensive, please-- I am a poor college student!

Merci!

  1. There are few vegetarian restaurants in Paris.

But in many restaurants, you can choose a vegetarian meal, for instance in Pizzerias or in the chain Hippopotamus.

  2. I'm a vegetarian and I did just visit Paris.  Breaky was an easy croissant with cappuccino (maybe a little yogurt).  I found plenty of sandwiches and salads I could eat for lunch.  It was dinner that was the problem.

While many restaurant wait staff speak a bit of English, I wish I would have written the phrase "no beef, pork, chicken, or any meat please.  I am a vegetarian.  Thank You." (translated in French, of course).  So I could hand it to the waiter.  I also wish that I had written down the French translation for steak, beef, pork, tenderloin... because I could look at the menu and see those words written in french and know that those were dinners I didn't want to order.

In the end, it all worked out O.K., but after 6 days, I was starving and I finally broke down and ate at McDonald's (barf).

  3. I suggest you check out the various websites which list the few vegetarian restaurants in Paris. Here is one: http://nwfolk.com/vegparis.html

A vegan diet is so contrary to every principle of French cuisine that the concept has had little traction in France. However, the demand is there, largely from tourists, and so there is at least some lip service to it in many otheriwse normal restaurants.
