  1. Each year 50 billion animals are slaughtered for food around the world  - to feed just 6 billion people.

By switching to a vegetarian diet, you will save more than 100 animals a year.

Yes you will make a difference. It's all about supply and demand. If you boycott meat consumption you will reduce the demand for meat, and in turn prevent animals being bred for meat. When people say vegetarians 'save' 100 animals per year, they aren't saved in the sense that some body rescues them and they live happily ever after. They are saved by preventing the need for the animals to be bred in the first place.

So by being vegetarian you prevent the unnecessary birth and cruel slaughter of about 100 animals.

  2. sorry but you don't save any animal lives at all by not eating meat. The "100 animals a year" figure is a simple but inaccurate interpretation of a mathematical equation. Number of animals killed divided by number of people. One becomes a vegtarian therfore his/her "share" of animal food is saved. Consider other FACTS ( not optimistic propoganda driven illusions) such as : the increase in the number of omnivores ( those that are born to omni diets, those who revert back to omni diets etc)is far greater than the increase in the number of vegetarians, converts or at birth. Animals not killed today will be killed at some other point in time. Decrease in local demand will lead to lower prices that will make meat more affordable somewhere else thus increasing demand again. The US is not the only populated country in the world nor is it the only meat consmer in the world. The saved animals "statistic" might work under the best of circumstances if world popualtion, economics, lifestlye trends, preferences etc are all static but obviously, they aren't.

Meat is not the only product that can be derived from animals. As you may have seen, gelatin is derived from aniamls and it's uses are far more diverse than just as an additive for food. So is leather and bone charcoal. So is animal/pet food etc etc. As a vegtarian, isn't the "hidden" animal product in food and products something for which you are on the lookout?

Last but not least, the number of vegtarians is simply not a matter of concern outside of those who benefit from the lifestyle. the demand for beef, especially high quality grae beef is actually on the rise not on the decline. However, companies who market vegetarian friendly products are the ones with the most to gain by this "feel good" statistic of animals "saved". Who is being manipulated by whom?

  3. Here are some statistics for you:

Based on average of US consumers…

U.S. Per Capita Meat Consumption 2007

    Chicken…87 lb (15 lives)

    Turkey… 18 lb (2 lives)

    Veal…1lb

    Lamb…1 lb

    Beef…66 lb (1 lives)

    Pork…51 lb (1 lives)

    Fish…16.6 lb (80 lives)

    Shellfish/other fish…8.8 lb (200 lives)

    Eggs…259 (259 lives)

Total…20 warm blooded animals + 259 eggs + 500 cold blooded animals per capita.

Based on US consumption pattern alone, and assume "other factors remained unchanged"…

    Total world population 6.6 billion

Estimated global Vegetarians are 10%=0.66 billion

Therefore, total lives saved by vegetarians worldwide…

    Warm blooded animals…13.20 billions

    Cold blooded animals…330 billions

    Eggs …170.94 billions

    ----------------------------

    Total…514.14 billion Lives Saved

    ----------------------------

You may surprised to know that the you have the power & capacity to safe of about 779 lives per year.

For a meat eater who lives for a 60 year period, about 5 MILLION LIVES are being devastated by one person!

    According to Chooseveg.com:

"The average vegetarian saves the lives of approximately 95 animals each year."

A few other sites were in the same area: 100 per year, over 100 per year.

So I suppose it's in that general area.

  4. I don't know about a calculator.

It's estimated that vegetarians prevent the suffering and deaths of 100 animals every year. So:

    100 x (times) # years vegetarian = # animals saved.

You have saved about 300 animals since you went veg! Congrats!
