I'm going on my honeymoon to costa rica, and my fiancee is a vegetarian. Is there enough vegetarian cuisine there that she will not have to eat side salads for a week and a half? Do they fry things in lard, such as beans? She eats eggs and dairy, just no meat products. Any recomendations for restauraunts?

  1. The best restaurant I can recommend you is TINJO, an asian cuisine restaurant, with the best vegetarian menu in the middle of San José.

Depending of the place you go, some fry things with lard, specially typical costarican cuisine restaurants.  You can find many italian restaurants with vegetarian options, like Pane e Vino, Tre Fratelli, Il Pomodoro, etc. (in San José).

  2. I'm sure she will find lots of things to eat, since there are lots of different vegetables and fruit in Costa Rica.  One of the most popular dishes, "gallo pinto", is made of beans and rice.

They do fry things, but usually they use vegetable oil or something similar.  You can always ask what kind of oil or "manteca" (like a solid kind of oil) they use.  Ask if it's "vegetal".  If not, ask them to use "Numar" (the most popular brand of margarine).

Since I don't know where in Costa Rica you're going, I cannot recommend any specific restaurants.

But I would say, don't worry and enjoy your honeymoon!

  3. There are plenty of vegetarian options in Costa Rica. Many of the touristy beach towns will have restaurants with vegetarian options. Also check out Vishnu restaurant in San Jose

  4. There is plenty to eat.... depending on where you go, you should be able to find food.

Its hard to recommend a restaurant, as you did not say where you are going. Most of the restaurants are complete dumps by American standards, but you just put the sanitary conditions out of your mind, ignore the dog lying on your feet, and just eat the really good food. I have never gotten sick there, so....

I dont think I have ever seen a salad in costa rica on all my trips there, not that you mention it. But I was always off the beaten path in the middle of nowhere, so maybe it was just too far to ship lettuce...
