Question:

Vegetarian school lunch for a teenager?

Hi, I became a vegetarian 6 months ago, but because I am going back to school this fall, I need a simple, affordable, vegetarian lunch option. I wouldn't mind eating the same thing everyday if it was healthy, delicious, and nutritious. It must be simple, because I want to pack it myself. I'm 13 years old, just an FYI. Thank you. Please write a detailed lunch such as: Carrots, Celery...etc. with 2 tsp. of ranch. Thank you!

  2. You can buy tofu sandwhich meats. At my grocery store (I shop at Loeb) they sell them in the flavors of turkey, chicken and I think bologna. I use them alot in my lunch.

    Maybe I'll just give you my lunch plan from today...

    2 Tofu turkey slices on brown bread, with mustard.

    1 cup of celery with 2 tsp of tatzeki (sorry I have NO clue how to spell that)

    1 apple

    1 Sweet and Salty Almond Crunch Granola bar

    Bottle of water.

    I usually just have something along the lines of that.

  3. You can buy vegan bread, vegan cheeses, and vegan lunch "meats" at most grocery stores. Yves has a great line of "deli slices".

    You can pack a small salad, some carrot sticks, some raisins, an apple, and a vegan sandwich. Very easy!

    Of course you can always pack left overs from your dinner the night before.

  4. A sandwiche made with wholemeal bread, spread (butter or soy spread), sliced tomato, onion, lettuce and chilli jam. Wholemeal bread is surprisingly high in iron and B vitamins.  I love grated carrot and houmous sandwiches though- very easy to make and delicious. As a snack you could take dried fruit, fresh fruit, yogurts, etc. Take a fruit smoothie as part of your lunch. Hope this helps.

  5. well i dont eat anything for lunch when i go to school....i know not  good but thats because Im not a fan of peanut butter and stuff....

    I mean I dont want to go into school with a bunch of stuff either..so depending on what your willing to carry here ya go::

    Carrots&celery with a small container of ranch.

    Bread of your choice..I'd like italian bread(like you see at subway style) with veggies but then again the veggies have juice making the bread soggy. Im so picky, sorry lol.

    you could bring fruit salad and whatever.....

  6. - 1/2 cup of hummus with baby carrots for dipping + fruit yogurt

    - PB&J sandwich + an orange

    - Prepackaged, flavored roasted tofu.  Slice it up into a veggie wrap sandwich, or put it on a green salad

    - Cheese sandwich and an apple.

    - Egg salad sandwich + baby carrots

    - a container of cottage cheese with fruit chunks, chopped walnuts and raisins

  7. I'm not vegetarian but I really enjoy having the following salad for my school lunch:

    Half a carrot, chopped into small sticks, canned beet root cut into strips, cucumber sliced, then those slices halved, Japanese marinated firm tofu,cut into strips, topped with pepper and about a teaspoon lemon juice. I have also replaced the tofu with kidney beans and swapped the lemon juice with about a teaspoon of store bought fat-free italian dressing.

    Alternatively, you could have the salad on wholemeal bread, omitting the dressing, but keeping the pepper.

    A fruit salad is what I have quite a bit in Summer.

    At the moment, it is winter where I live, so I also bought a small thermos for the cold days. I found this recipe a perfect school lunch, made the night before, because it keeps for a couple of days, but I did halve the recipe and add soup pasta too.

    MEXICAN BEAN AND CAPSICUM SOUP

    Ingredients (serves 4)

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 onion, chopped

    1 clove garlic, crushed

    2 1/2 cups chicken stock

    400g can tomato pieces

    2 tablespoons tomato paste

    420g can Edgell Red Kidney Beans, drained

    1 small red capsicum, chopped

    1 small green capsicum, chopped

    1 teaspoon Mexican seasoning

    fresh basil leaves, to serve

    Method

    Place oil, onion, and garlic in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes or until soft.

    Add stock, tomato and tomato paste. Bring to the boil. Simmer for 10 minutes.

    Add kidney beans, capsicum and seasoning. Cook for 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into bowls and top with fresh basil leaves.

  8. hey im thirteen too!! what i pack is a burrito

    1 torttlia

    1 can cooked beans

    6 to 5 slices cheese

    and 2 table spoons sunflower seeds

    2 teaspoons humus

    wrap in burritoo put in oven till cheese is melted

    {some time i get celeary and carootes ectra ectra and purea the and make a sauce and put in burrito}

    p.s it may sound funny but its my fave

    - peanut butter, banana, and honey(opt.) wrap, sandwich, or pita. (whole grain)

    - peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole grain bread

    - whole grain wrap with vegetarian refried beans or black beans, lettuce, cheese(opt.), onion, tomato, and salsa.

    - 1 whole wheat pita (or half) with tomato sauce, cheese, and veggies (make this ahead of time, and eat it cold for lunch)

    - 1 whole grain wrap with hummus, lettuce, onion, tomato, pepper, cucumber, etc.

    - almond butter and apple sandwich, pita, or wrap (whole grain)

    - healthy protein bar

    - veggie soup or bean chili in a thermos

    Sides:

    - chopped veggies (plain or with ranch or hummus)

    - fruit (apple, banana, pear, berries, melon, etc.)

    - string cheese

    - whole grain crackers with string cheese or by itself

    - granola bar

    - baked chips

    - yogurt with or without fruit

    Drinks:

    - water

    - skim, 1%, or soy milk

    - 100% fruit juice

    Those are some suggestions. A lunch usually has 1 main, 1-2 sides, and a drink. Try to include something from every food group to make a nutritious lunch. :)
