As many of u know I'm a Meat eater but i respect everyone's right to eat whatever they want. Some of u are my contacts so you know i don't come here starting trouble. I respect that many of you don't like eating animals. But what i want to know is aren't vegetables living things as well? I know it's not the same as killing an animal but it is still a living creature. So can someone explain the difference to me? Again this question is not to bash or put down anyone b/c as many of u know i have a couple of friends here in this section & they know i respect. I just want a better understanding about this. Thanks & hope u all had a wonderful 4th of July.

  1. Animals are a total different thing. Yes, they're both living things but take into consideration that plants die and rot fast.

  2. Very intrestinq except its not a living thing it reproduces by the seeds & qrows but does it breathe ....answer is no animal  breathes grows reproduces kind of like a human (i am not a vegeterian ) but i do not like hamburgers or pork or bacon only chicken & hot dogs =)

    God Bless

  3. Thank you for asking this question so respectfully :)

As Hollywood said, plants and animals are both living things. The distinguishing characteristic between animals and plants is that animals are conscious beings capable of feeling pain and suffering.  Animals are capable of feeling happiness, joy, sorrow, and a desire to live.

Plants don't have central nervous systems, brains, pain receptors, nerve endings, or anything else that would indicate the ability to feel pain.

It's kind of like bacteria... bacteria are living things, but I don't feel badly when I kill thousands of bacteria every time I brush my teeth. Bacteria aren't able to suffer.

  4. Plants do not have a soul. and A sense of what is happening to them when they are being killed. and slaughtered. So thus they dont feel the pain

  5. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Excuse me while I catch my breath. You actually think you're being clever too, I bet! Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Unless you're a fruitarian yourself, you are in no position to judge, dear! =)

  6. Plants don't have the capacity to suffer.  Animals do.

  7. If you leave a carrot in the ground once it has grown it will rot all vegetables have a relatively short life span so you are not exactly killing it. If you left an animal to live out its ife span you'd be waiting along time for that meat meal. For me its not about not liking eating animals its about respect and the hideous arrogance of human kind

  8. Yup plants are living things so are animals but animals have souls minds and feel pain love and more plants simply dont . Plants are meant to be eaten point blank . Theres no such thing as torturing a plant its meant to be used as food and die to grow new ones .  Animals on the other hand do feel pain and yes they can be used as food but do they really need to be tortured and kept so horribly for this purpose . Its so amazing that ppl feel so passionately for those who cant speak for themselves  ! The difference is that plants purpose is to be eaten whether or not by us or some other animal . I see you have point too that maybe we should have more respect for living things (trees , veggies and such ) even if they arent alive in the same way that we are . But dont feel bad about eating veggies its there purpose to be eaten its natural . I think eating meat is natural too but the way those poor creatures are kept is despicable ,,, Anyways hope this helps you did bring out some fair points ! Lol hope your veggie friends don't kick your butt about this , open dialog about others beliefs are healthy !

  9. Good question. You know that suffering and torture that animals go through? well, vegetables don't.

  10. Hardly any factory-farmed animals are killed painlessly. Google will show you hundreds, if not thousands of videos of the cruel conditions inside a slaughterhouse. There are also many books and websites which detail the immense amount of abuse and suffering which goes on inside them.

The idea of vegetarianism is that, although to live is to kill, you can REDUCE the amount of killing you do.

Do you truly believe that plants have the same amount of awareness as animals? You wouldn't feel bad about walking over a group of baby chicks, the way you would walk over grass? The truth is, humans are animals, and as such, we identify with other animals way before we identify with plants. Animals have families and eat food and sleep and feel fear - plants are completely autonomous and have no brains or central nervous systems or nerve endings.

Even if plants did feel the same amount of pain as animals, your logic still wouldn't make any mathematical sense. Thousands of plants are killed to produce a single pound of meat. Cows eat huge amounts of food and consume great amounts of fresh water to produce just a few pounds of meat. It's an extremely expensive, inefficient process. Therefore, why not cut out the middleman (the pig, cow, or chicken eating all those plants) and just feed the plants to humans? It would be far, far more efficient and cause much less killing.

You can't avoid all murder, but you can do your part to end as much suffering as possible. I do not believe a stalk of corn suffers anywhere near as much by having its pods removed (a natural process which does not kill the plant) as a pig does by having a hook shoved through its leg and then mercilessly hung upside down to be skinned, often all while still alive and struggling.

  11. vegetables dont have pain receptors

    thats what i go on

and thank you for being respectful

  12. For me, it's about what we are best suited to be eating.  Doesn't take much to see that we are in no way supposed to be eating meat.  We are just not 'designed' for that.  This is why I stopped eating animal products.

But, if I were 'designed' and best suited to eating meat, that's what I would eat.  Although, I would look to eat products that are environmentally friendly, healthy, organic, not over indulge, eat locally, not eat rain-forest meat, and so forth.

  13. That's a really old question.

Plants don't have nervous systems, hearts, blood, or any other vital organs.

    Animals do.

Pull a leaf off of a plant and it will grow back.

Chop off an animal's head, it doesn't grow back.

It's just not the same thing.

  14. I know that some people are completely baffled as to how we animal lovers can equate the suffering of animals to the suffering of humans.  Maybe I am being just as bigoted when I say that you cannot equate the suffering of vegetables and fruits to the suffering of animals.  Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think you can equate animal suffering to human suffering, but I think that animal torture, in the form of factory farming and mass slaughter, can be equated to slavery in that it not only hurts the "slave" but it destroys the morality of the "slave master."

Factory farming is unnatural.  That is what i am against.  I am not inherently against killing animals for food.  I think it should be done as quickly and humanely as possible and we all know that is simply not the norm in our system.  Prior to their deaths, most farm animals live in terrible conditions.  I could go on and on, but I won't.

  15. I really respect the way you approached this question.

Anyway, my answer is that vegetables lack a central nervous system, therefor cannot feel "pain".

  16. plants don't have a nervous system, or feel pain, whereas animals do

  17. I was wondering about that, too. But I guess plants can't really feel suffering like animals do. I also VERY HIGHLY respect ANYONE who can go without eating meat, 'cause I love it. I also don't see how it even helps, because as long as there's one company buying that meat from tortured animals, the business will go on. And there will always be someone who buys it. I hate the way some slaughterhouses go through the animals, but I also have come to realize it's hard to do anything about it.

  18. You know Scooter I understand you completely.

  19. Hi,

Both plants and animals are alive, though the ability to feel pain separates them, as you know. But if somebody says, ''I don't eat anything that was once alive'' then I guess they would be wrong. A better, more accurate saying would be ''I don't eat animals''.

Veg*ism is about minimising/reducing animal suffering in the world.

    I hope this helps. :)

  20. A vegetable will die if we don't take it out of the ground.

    Carrots don't feel pain.

    Carrots don't mate, don't move.

    Animals have lives.

    Ever heard the reincarnation belief?

Many vegetarians use that principle b/c if you believe in being re-born, you'll eventually be re-born into an animal.
