Vegetarians and vegans: how do you feel about carnivorous plants?

Yes piscespets, I have eaten bugs, crickets, nice and crispy.

In countries you've probably never heard of people actually eat them because they're a good source of protein and 'affordable'. I could make a long list of things I've eaten but I'm not here to shock you!

As for the people asking why I ask this... I was just hoping for some funny answers! Maybe something like 'as long as I don't have to feed the plant steak!'

I'm definitely not making fun of you, in fact every now and then I switch to a vegetarian diet for a couple of months to clean my body and feel well but I try not to be too extreme in anything I do.

Thanks for the replies!

  1. i've never seen a carnivorous plant, but i'm pretty sure wouldn't care. it would probably be like any meat-eating animal, that it needs meat to survive. i don't really care about people eating meat, i just think it would be nicer for them to just convert to vegetarianism.

  2. Carnivorous plants do not live on insects. They are like any other plant, but with the modification to drown and digest a stray bug that falls into its trap. These plants evolved in low-nitrogen environments, and those plants that could capture extra protein in the form of insects, obviously survived. Just wanted to clear that up. A venus flytrap can grow perfectly well without ever catching an insect in its life, provided the soil is fertile.

As for what vegetarians think of it, I fail to see the relevance.

  3. I think they are interesting and unusual.

    Why?

  4. I think nature designed them to eat insects, so they do.  There is no moral judgement to make there.

  5. Let's just say I wouldn't buy one unless I had a serious fly problem. Last summer flies attacked my dog so severely his ears were a bloody mess. I hand to put up fly strips in which I felt bad about but I had little choice. At that point I believed it ok to kill in defense of another. Some Venus Fly Traps may have been a more natural and useful way to cut down on their numbers.

  6. I do not mind. This is necessary for these plants to survive. Just like with the bird eating the worm, or with cat eating the mouse. But it is different with humans. Us beings eating other animals is not necessary at all. It is a choice; and a very horrid one if may add.

  7. Hmmm good question!

Carnivorous plants are just like any meat-eating animal, like lions, tigers, wolverines... If the plant is carnivorous, that means it absolutely needs meat to survive. So I feel fine that they are eating meat, because it is not their fault..they need it to survive.

Humans, however, are omnivores and don't need to rely on meat. We can get protein from so many other things, such as beans, eggs and nuts. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine if other people want to eat meat, but I personally do not for various reasons (animals, health and enviorment, mostly).

    Hope I helped :)

  8. They exist. I have no feelings about them whatsoever.

I wonder what sort of answers you were expecting?

  9. Simple.  The plants need to eat the bugs.  We don't need to eat bugs.  Do you eat bugs?

  10. I think they're cool!

  11. Umm I feel, they're plants. Am I meant to have a problem with them? I have no problem with cats or eagles so why would I feel anything about carnivorous plants?
