  1. It was actually harder or me to go vegetarian than it was for me to go vegan. I never really liked much of anything about meat, but for some reason I would crave it.

What helped me is mock meat. They make it so it has the same texture as the meat it's supposed to resemble and it tastes even better than flesh. It also has about the same amount of protein, and fewer calories and less sodium than meat. Also, if you're a teenager like I was when I converted, it makes it real easy and conveniant to still be able to eat with your family because whoever is cooking can just substitute it in your dish.

You can find quite a few mock meats your regular grocery store. But if you have a whole foods near you, they have a HUGE selection. it's definitely worth a trip there.

Anyway, congrats on the decision to go veg and good luck!

  2. Don't worry! It will get easier! I still have cravings for meat occasionally, but then I remind myself that I am doing something good by being a vegetarian. I am protecting the lives of innocent animals! You are too!

  3. No, I don't find it hard.  And, honestly, I never did.  I had one craving for meat about 11 months after I gave it up, but it passed.  I've been vegan for 10 months and have had no desire to eat dairy or eggs at all (maybe I'm due for my craving in another month or so...)

You're new at this and it's perfectly natural to want what you're used to.  Get yourself a couple of great cookbooks, try a bunch of fun new recipes to distract yourself.  If you feel strongly about your reasons for going vegetarian, you'll probably get past it being hard.  It just becomes second nature.

  4. I didn't find it hard to stop eating any animal products but it took about 4 months to learn about how to follow a proper vegan diet, learn a variety of recipes so it wasn't boring, what products were vegan and where to get them from.

  5. of course its hard to start out, your so use to eating the meat... but you become so use to eating other things to find the protein.

im only a vegetarian, so i dont know how hard it is to be a vegan but that must be even more tough to do. i like my dairy products. and i already take multi-vitamins so im not missing anything.

  6. i got used to it pretty quickly, the problem is most restaraunts still arent used to it.

  7. You need to give yourself a break, you just started a new diet 3 weeks ago, it's going to be hard.

I had a hard time being vegan at first because so many products had ingredients that I couldn't have and didn't know it until I looked it up later.  I have to say that I did crave ice cream but soy substitutes took care of that.

Changing your diet on the turn of a dime is rough, but I think that it helps to remember the source of what you are about to eat.

Don't give up and good luck!

  8. Oh, girl, it'll take a lot longer than that. Depends how much you loved meat and how much meat you ate. I think after about 6 months I was over everything but cheese. Cheese took another 6 months. At the 2-year point, I didn't miss meat at all. Looked ugly on a plate to me. My room mate eats meat, and when it's sitting on the counter I get nauseous.

Make sure you make/buy meals you enjoy. You'll discover which you love if you get a few cook books. If you don't like the food, you won't want to be a vegetarian.

One time saver is that good old crockpot. Prepare everything the night before, plop it in the pot before work/school- when you get home dinner's ready! Amazon has the cook book.

    Hang in there!

  9. I'm a vegetarian, I try to avoid dairy as much as possible as well but I'm not vegan. At home I don't find it hard, even though I am the only vegetarian in the house but when I'm with people I find it a bit hard. Don't worry, it's going to get easier after a while, it's always harder at the beginning!

    Good luck :)

  10. Well since i became veg@n I only slipped up once and that was on bread sticks but we won't get into that one!! I don't find it difficult to not eat meat and dairy on a daily basis because it just stopped being appealing to be after a while and i've only been vegan for 4 months. It usually gets easier over time cause you've gone so long without it and you've heard such horrible things that it just isn't appealing and may never be again. But thats just how I see it for myself in the future.

  11. it was like a litle more than two weeks for me, but its different in everyone, so dont worry! now, it isnt hard at all. it just takes litle time. : )

  12. I've been vegan for 2.5 years. I would say it took me about 6 months to get over missing the old foods i use to love to eat that were not vegan. I did a lot of research and am well educated on the reasons to be vegan and that has helped me stick with it. I still get cravings every once in a while, especially when i see or smell my old favorite non-vegan foods. But it doesn't cause me any distress anymore.

Good Luck and good choice in becoming vegetarian. You are doing yourself and the world a huge favor.

  13. I became vegetarian because i love animals. Here is how i told my mom : my mom and sister came home with Wendeys and got me chicken nuggets. I didn't eat them. It's not hard for me. (the only hard thing is watching others eat meat, which grosses me out) Good luck!
