This might sound stupid but is meat sauce actually made from meat or is it just the name for it?

  1. It depends. Read the label. Usually, I would say yes.

  2. Meat sauce by definition contains meat. When I make a meat sauce from scratch, it is vegetarian up to the point where I add meatballs, sausage, and/or brajole after which it is no longer vegetarian. The meat usually is in the sauce for hours (at least by my family recipe...Ragu is evil!) so even if you just eat the tomato portion it will be infused with meat (or bit of meat that has disintegrated into the sauce). For Italian cooking you should ask for a marinara which is lacto-vegetarian when you want a tomato gravy (red sauce).

  3. It doesn't actually contain chunks of meat, but it is probably made of meat-based broth.

  4. Check the ingredients.
