Question:

Veggie dogs made just from tofu and not soy?

I am having a bonfire at my house this weekend and am having a dilemma considering the food. I am a vegetarian so I do not want to buy meat and support the horrible industry. But I know that processed soy, like that found in veggie dogs and burgers etc., has been proven to be bad for your health and can mess up hormones among other things. Plus, there is a girl coming who is pregnant and I worry that the soy could be even worse for her and/or her baby if we did eat it. Tofu, on the other hand, is a more natural form of the soybean and so is not bad for you but I cannot find a veggie dog with no soy and made from just tofu. Anyone know of any tofu-only brands? If not, is there any other main-meal veggie food you can think of that would be fun to have at a bonfire?

  1. Tofu is SOY.

Once it awhile like this special occasion this will not HURT anyone. UNLESS the are allergic to soy.

I'm sorry to say I have no brands to offer as I don't do the faux meats at all(allergies).

  2. Tofu is soy.  Eating them occasionally is not bad for your health.

    What about Tofu Pups?

  3. Oops, tofu is just the Japanese name for soy bean curd. The Chinese name is tau-hu. It is known by other names in other cultures. If the fake meat substitute uses soy bean curd, it is most likely no different from this "more natural" soy bean curd or tofu that you harp about A steak cut is no different from beef cubes. they are still both from a cow.

PS If you hve been to a soy bean factory, you are likely not to eat soy bean curd or tofu again. Especially those made by Mom n Pop industries who sometimes use shrimp broth and fish sauce in making their tofu

  4. If you want to grill, why not have veggie-kebabs?  Just make regular kebabs without any meat.  Or black bean burgers?  The guests can bring some side dishes like chips and dip, salads, etc.

  5. A processed soy hotdog isn't going to harm you, your guests, or a fetus any more than the buns and mustard you're serving them on.

Look for organic veggie/tofu dogs - they're out there.  Yves makes tofu dogs that can be found at most large grocers.

  6. Tofu is made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the  curds into blocks. So tofu is actually just the milk from the compressed soybean. Soy is normally not bad for you but I don't know about mock meats because I don't eat them often. I would try grilling up some veggies or making some mock meat hamburger (also contains soy).

P.S Tofu is not made with shrimp broth because it would not be vegan

  7. Well, tofu IS soy.  And the hormones in soy are relatively weak--far weaker than what is in animal products, so they're unlikely to harm your pregnant guest.  You might want to try veggie burgers.  Amy's uses organic ingredients, and according to the website, the California Veggie Burger is made without soy.

I've tried the Tofu Pups, and they are just AWFUL.  Don't bother with them.

You could also make tofu or tempeh kabobs with vegetables.

  8. Let me dispel the myth that soy is bad for your health.  The ADA stated that plant based diets are both healthy and advantageous in many situations.

If you want a hot dog to roast I would suggest you look for The Good Dog by Yves.  It is unparalleled in taste and texture and is proven a healthy alternative.  Thousands of fans at Candlestick Park cannot be wrong.  By the way, use caution when cooking veggie products over a flame because they cook faster and may flame up.
