Question:

Veggie oil car fuel?

I was wondering what one needs, and how they switch it over. Is there any special prep that needs to be done to the oil? What are the specific pros and cons of veggie oil besides the green factor? Thanks in advance.

  1. The process is actually pretty extensive for people who don't know what they're doing, if they decide to do it without a mechanic. I'm doing exactly this in school right now, and there are a LOT of things to do. My advice: if you want a hobby, then doing it yourself might be fun (though it may take a while), but if you want it done fast, then it would be better to have a mechanic take care of it.

Pros: It's better for the environment, you pay less for diesel, and (though this may be a con in other people's opinions) the exhaust might end up smelling like french fries! I hope the car I'm helping to change to biofuel will have french fri exhaust!

Cons: If you are doing it by yourself, it could take a while. Have fun! :)

  2. It is impractical to convert a gasoline engine to diesel fuel. The main thing for cooking oil  is to filter it , so there is nothing to stop up your injectors in a diesel engine.

  3. fattywagons has cheapest and best setup.I have not bought diesel in 3 months.

Pre 1985 Mercedes diesel are best choice engines.

  4. As far as I know, veggie oil has to be burned in a diesel.

It has to be filtered a number of times and run through a converter.

Pros--don't have to buy $4.00 a gallon diesel fuel!

    Cons--exhaust smells like french fries!

  5. Pure vegetable oil can be run in a diesel engine without being converted to biodiesel, but doing so can lead to engine and fuel-system damage.  Vegetable oil is much more viscous (thicker, and stickier) than diesel fuel and it burns a little differently.  A diesel engine can be converted to run on straight veg, but this isn't widely available, and will be quite costly.  However, you can burn veg mixtures in diesel engines (possibly after replacing some fuel lines).  I have heard of people doing 90% diesel / 10% veg.  Sometimes people will use more veg, and cut it with normal gasoline.

You can however, burn biodiesel in most diesel engines without any modification.  If any mods are needed, it's usually just the fuel lines.

Biodiesel will get about 4% lower mileage than normal diesel.  Vegetable oil will get about 10% lower mileage.

  6. try producing veggie oil quicker than vehicles burn it. Very difficult.
