  1. Stick mainly to veggies, they have next to no calories and are highly nutritious. So veggies like carrot, bok choi, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and fresh peas should be offered a lot, about a tablespoon of one every day to keep up a variety. Keep fruits in the diet also, but only use them about once every two or three days in the same portion sizes. Rats can eat a lot of fruits, to name a few; apples, tomatoes, grapes (red grapes are said to have cancer-preventing properties), melon, banana, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, cherries and apricots. I feed my rat a fruity rabbit mix and good dry dog food which I find works better and helps support a healthy, and often prize winning rat! Dry pasta also helps wear down teeth and cooked rice is very good for detoxifying a rat's digestive system and getting rid of any excess proteins. Treats (once a week) can also include hard-boiled egg, porridge, tiny amounts of cheese and tiny amounts of food leftovers may not be good for rats, but it's NEVER harmed any rats in my rescue center (all 160 of them) and it always makes them happy. Sorry for the long-winded answer, but never restrict your rats diet!! Also, female rats rarely get fat, if that's what you've got, male rats put on weight  much quicker and end up being very fat without the proper diet.

  2. The thing about fruits and veggies is that they aren't fattening.  They make your rat full due to the fiber, but are mostly water, so they don't really add much mass to your rats.

That being said, because they are mostly water, if you feed them too much their stools can get pretty runny and gross.  I give my two rats maybe 5 baby carrots broken in half, or maybe a handful of grapes, a handful of lettuce/spinach, etc and usually a chunk of anything I'm making for lunch or dinner (mine looove banana).  Certain fruits and veggies are natural laxatives, so also want to watch out for that (like tomatoes and raisins).

    Hope that helps!
