I'm purchasing a vehicle from a private seller for $700 and I'm leaving a $200 down payment, how much would I have to pay in sales tax if I live in New York State?

Every county has a different sales tax rate.  Most are 8%

So that would be 48.00 Paid to the DMV when you register the car.
