I am moving back to california. She is staying in wisconsin with the car. We both agreed she may keep it. However, we're still making payments on it & the title is in both our names. Where would I have to go to change the title to her name only? Plus how much is the fee?

  1. Your local DMV office or county tax assessor's office should be able to do that. Fee varies from state to state.

  2. most names can be taken off the title after six months as long as payments are current the dmv should be able to do it but the place who sold the vehicle if it was a car lot or the bank who financed it.....good choice though let her keep it and pay for the headache especially if you take your name off the title

  3. Usually since you are still paying on the vehicle, it must stay in both of your names. However you can call your local tag office and ask that since you are moving and to be on the safe side(I am sure she wouldn't do anything crazy), when it come time to get insurance changes and such you want to take your name off of the title. You may have to do a bill of sale, stating you are selling her the car and she is going to responsible for remaining payments, which will also help you in the case she defaults and you are not held liable. You can also ask them about the cost of any changes while your are there because it may vary from state to state.

  4. Without the lienholders permission, your name must stay on the title. Names on titles can't be changed without the title in hand.
