Velator bags his maiden victory at Taunton – Horseracing Update
Anthony Honeyball’s black gelding, Velator, accomplished the first ever victory of his career by winning Bathwick Tyres Bridgwater Handicap Hurdle at Taunton horseracing track on Tuesday, February 21.
In the Class 5 contest of 3m1/2f distance, the five-year-old runner defeated a dozen of opponents to seal a splendid success.
The race started at 2:30 (GMT). Driven by Rachael Green, the momentous gelding reached the finish line 2 1/4-lengh ahead of his competitors.
Velator’s first triumph came after a long gap of 6 defeats. Since the beginning of his career on November 4, 2011, he had been struggling till yesterday.
Ahead of the Taunton event, most of the bookmakers were underrating Velator but the brilliant gelding proved his talent properly by achieving the hallmark.
During the post-race presentation ceremony, Honeyball extolled his pupil wholeheartedly and anticipated that he would show such type of big runs in the future as well.
The trainer was of the view that the first victory would prove to be a stepping stone for Velator.
Apart from Honeyball, most of the game experts have too prophesised a promising future for the victor who is just at the threshold of his career.
Among Velator’s competitors, Kowloon finished 2nd in the race while Hobb’s Dream grabbed the third top spot.
Kowloon, the Warren Greatrex-trained black gelding, has been winless since his debut on March 14, 2011.
On the other hand, Hobb’s Dream badly failed to capitalise on the momentum which her last victory on January 31, 2012, had given her. As a whole, the trainee of Neil Mulholland has won 4 out of her total 26 starts so far.
Not So Prudent finished fourth while Cosway Spirit got the fifth position yesterday. Gentleman Jimmy and Cannon Fire finished 6th and 7th respectively.
The 8th spot went to Quix and the 9th position was bagged by Changing Lanes. Makin A Fuss was the 10th to cross the boundary strap.
At the end of the day, the topper walked away with £2,395.40 while the second and third top finishers bagged £698.25 and £349.30 respectively. By and large, it was an amazing competition packed with many twists and turns.
