  1. The Velocette Venom (I believe) had a 500cc single cylinder engine.

They were a little tricky to ride. For instance, when you coasted to a stop at a light, it was common practice to snick it out of gear and not engage it until you were ready to pull away. The clutch was a slight achilles heel, and by doing this, you extended it's life. They had a decompression lever that you set before you kick started the thing (there was no such thing as electric start) and you soon built up a very strong leg. To not activate the decompression lever on a Velo and kick start her, would usually result in the kick start lever being forced upward with enough power to literally throw it's rider over the handlebars. The 500 singles had a lot of pulling power (torque) and you had to be very careful not to pour too much power going into a turn, because the engine had enough power to pull you upright and clear across the road. The Velo was a great bike to ride. They don't make them like that anymore. They passed into the grat horizon like other great British bikes like BSA, Panther (650cc single) Rudge, just to name a few.

Edit:  There was a 600cc Velocette in the Model O Series and I was wrong about Panther (even though you did not ask about that bike) their single was a 600cc (Model 100) and not a 650.
